The world, from a design standpoint, looks fantastic. But I'm not sure I can tolerate the washed out visuals. Everything has that hazy look I mentioned previously. It's really distracting.

The lack of a 'suspend' or 'pause' was a massive oversight. But in no way does there need to be checkpoints. Returnal works in a very similar manner to Dark Souls: you work your way through an area, finally reaching a shortcut which opens up quick access to new areas. Returnal is the same way.

Correct, you'll unlock traits on weapons the more you use it. And, since traits are randomly assigned, you'll occasionally get a weapon with a combination of traits that make it totally OP.

The second area (actually, all areas) are only accessible after defeating a boss. Bosses are behind a giant red door show on the map. The main path through a level is never blocked by a keyed door. Anything that requires a key is purely optional. I'm guessing you missed going down a branch...

You find keys randomly to open those doors and chests. It may not be possible to open everything. Who cares, it's random.
