It's a difference of scale and risk vs reward. You can save scum with the save potions, but that increases your drunkeness so even if you get a good source of belladonna you can't abuse it like you're trying to get 20 lucky crits on drizzt right out of candlekeep.

Yeah I don't see how basically all launch vehicles aren't being reimagined right now. What SpaceX has done is impressive, but it's not like they're using vibranium struts and arc reactors. NASA, Boeing et all have got to be looking at following suit, and that's a beautiful thing.
