IT/Software career thread: Invert binary trees for dollars.

"how do you do this job when we aren't paying you to do it?" What does this mean? To answer your question, " should extra effort be required to advance a career?" not always. Sometimes there's a crunch time and you have to spend extra effort. Sometimes you get tasked with developing a web...

    Pregnancy Thread

Just a note on this, I heard a lot of people tell us everything would feel natural. That wasn't the case at all for me and nearly every aspect of parenting I've had to learn from cognitive focus instead of instinct.

No I don't think so. Voxel is a bit of a nebulous and misused word. It's a combination of volume and pixel, and is sort of a 3d pixel. So a game like Minecraft which is made up of these blocks is thought of as the quintessential voxel game, but it actually doesn't use voxel rendering, it uses...

If someone gives the impression that they don't have a lot of experience coding in their career, either because they're someone transitioning into a programming career or they are a recent grad, usually the, "what side projects do you have" question is the only chance you can give them to show...

I try to generally follow the codebase I'm in. People who have really strong opinions over naming conventions, capitalizations etc are usually too rigid in their thinking. but my preference is upper camel for namespaces, class/struct names, enums etc. Lower camel for functions and member...

Interns are such a double edged sword. On one hand you can pay them low amounts, on the other hand you have to be very careful about what projects you give them and spend a ton of time both mentoring and helping them. Even experienced professionals have limited levels of contribution in the...

Don't be so quick to believe that. Creating art assets with a voxel based game is very non-trivial, even if all they're doing is creating a templates for a randomization engine. Those templates are expensive as is modifying the randomization engine. I wouldn't call procedural content the future...

Voxel based MMO? The biggest risk with that is even though the hopium they're peddling makes it sound easy to create randomly generated worlds players find interesting, it's not. Anyone who has played Minecraft extensively knows that once you've seen a few chasms, nether forts, abandoned...

What have they said about risk vs reward? I think game developers have generally done a very poor job of balancing risk vs reward, possibly because they are often hesitant to ever let the player risk anything but his time.

We'll see how it works out. I'm still envisioning there being a number of static landscapes being copied into multiple instances with different rulesets. I think part of the reason I think of the word instance as being very generalized is because I'm a programmer. Just because two instances of a...

Star Citizen Online - The search for more money

I hit max level a few days after release, then spent almost all my time in one of a few farming areas or all the places you PvP or raid mobs at. Every once in a while I'll return to a zone I leveled in that is now chock full of houses. It is a pretty dramatic change.

AA is definitely a traditional MMO. Very limited instancing, strict servers, ability for players to dramatically change the world, no zoning.

I think a lot of people will play it as if it's an MMO. But right now their hype is to cater to the MMO, singleplayer and instanced multiplayer crowd.

Sometimes it's less about whether the knowledge you learned in school is relevant and it's more about proving you are qualified enough to get a degree. Yeah there's a lot of bums who glide their way through college somehow, but having a 4 year CS degree from a decent university and having a...

Important piece: The challenge with computer vision often isn't how precise or how many objects can be classified, but how well it handles corner cases of occluded, shadowed, reflective or otherwise degraded images. If you a person a set of 100 small images, 50 of which have dogs and 50 of...

Not sure what the apprehension about a coop/multiplayer FO4 is. FO3 was basically a big-budget singleplayer DayZ/h1z1 with a lot of NPCs, quests and built up areas, right? The other major counterpoint to FO3/NV being necessarily lonely is is how popular party members were in FO3. Making...

If you have good content that people want, getting it out is easy. It's not like music where you have a few talented musicians in a band who are missing a proper recording studio, expert advice and marketing to get exposure. If you produce some good content for gaming the community it's targeted...
