Yeah, Merrill is trash. I used Vanguard for a long time and had no issues when I was more passive, but if you want to get a bit more proactive than I'd go with fidelity. I eventually moved everything over from Vanguard to Fidelity, even my passive stuff.

Vanguard or Fidelity are simple enough and are pretty much the gold standard for long term passive investing for 401k/IRA

I'd lean towards the smaller guy. When looking at houses last year I looked at some of the larger developments with new houses and the build/material quality was much lower compared to a new house being built by a smaller guy who only did a few a year. I ended up buying from the smaller guy.
