If you going battle master def. go half orc and either use great axe because savage attack are crazy good or grab great weapon fighting with a greatsword to be more consistant. First play through solo going Lore Bard.

It is that or pick a feat and feats are insanely strong game changing abilities. Typically if you only playing to level 10 or so two feats are better than ability scores but really depends on what kind of build you going for.
