/shrug Haven't had time to try it, bu I hear PS2 is pretty good. Was a huge fan of PS1 for 6 months or so. So they are capable enough. And it may be for the best they weren't approved for the bazzillion dollar budget but instead have to go on the cheap. SWTOR was pretty much forced to be a...

    Guild Wars 2

For more traditional mmo's what you say is true. But GW2 has a different business model. They expect their players to drop out and come back later. That's what happened in GW1. My friends, guildmates and I would play for a couple months, go do something else for a few months, come back then drop...

Lol, right. You go girl. There were a couple bosses you could use a ranger on though. We even had an enchanter tank a LDON boss once, this was right after LDON came out mind you. It wasn't trivial. Don't remember why we used the chanter, I think just because we figured out it could be done.

Yes, Sks and Pals could be dropped in for certain things. Especially snap agro issues. Whenever the main mob got out of control and went after the clothies, a SK or Pal was expected to save them. But the Wars took over as soon as we died. Without defensive we didn't last long. And the more...

    EQ Never

It's true and you know it. I main tanked in a mid tier guild as a Sk, but it was old content. When I joined the top guild on the server only Wars were mt for the endgame content. You rotated Wars and when defensive went down, the next one took over. That was true in all endgame raiding guilds...
  6. Grim1

    EQ Never

Then you were doing trivial content. All endgame raids had only Wars as mt. Sk's and Pals occassionally tanked trash, but for the Big Mob(s) it was only Wars because defensive was the only way any tank could survive.
  7. Grim1

    EQ Never

Not in any real raid, trivialized content doesn't count. Warrior's defensive was too strong and that is why there were 8 wars to every sk/pal in most raids. Modern EQ is not the EQ anyone uses as a benchmark.
  8. Grim1

    EQ Never

And that's why there were so many sks and paladins main tanking in raids.... When you start taking out all the things that made EQ1 unique, then guess what? You end up with extruded grey pablum. I'm not saying EQ1 should have every aspect copied, but variety, penalites and rare classes /...

    EQ Never

I didn't say anyting about stronger classes. SK's were never considered a stronger class. There was a benifit to being and ogre or troll if you were a tank. But it was minor and other races did just as well.
  10. Grim1

    EQ Never

If you are going to stick with classes then the original EQ actually did a pretty good job. I even liked the xp penalties for certain races / classes, although the grouping xp penalty for sk's was not a good thing. Making it harder to level certain classes / races makes them rare. And ill...

Some of the "community" folks get upset with them. I'm kind of in that camp also, but purely out of nostalgia. Put me in game needing to do some dungeon for a daily and I get pissed off if that tool isn't readily available.
  12. Grim1

    EQ Never

Some folks don't like them but a decent LFG tool is critical for modern mmo's. GW2 screwed up not having one from the get go. I'm not much of a fan of them but some things have changed too much to go back. Forcing people to group is good, but if you do that then getting a group has to be as easy...

Heh, my first reaction is that this would be too harsh. But after thinking about it a bit, it could be cool. I always thought it was funny watching the nekid high level raiders run past me on their way to reviving their corpses, lost in the Plane of Fear or some such. Watching a nekid high level...

A strict copy of EvE's zone system would never work for a fantasy based PvE game like EQNext. You can't create that many zones with unique art assets for one thing. Sure maybe with proceedural type stuff but it would still be bland and lifeless because mobs would be scattered and simplistic. And...

Haha.. good post. But your argument that only 20 people would play a EQ1 clone for a start, as well as your attacks on people who dispute that baseless claim. Much of your post I can agree with, some in modified form. Harsh death penalties can easily coexist with no penalties. As I suggested...

EQ F2P- Returning Players & Current Content

If you mean two boxing then they don't care. A large portion of their populace multi-boxes and it is easy to do. They don't actively encourage it but they love people spending cash on multiple accounts.

No, I just refuted your claim that it is all or nothing for them. SoE is a business, not a poker game.
  18. Grim1

    EQ Never

Lol, and just when I was starting to listen to you, you had to go and ruin it with hyberbolic drivel such as this. If what you said were true then SoE would have been shut down a long time ago. Use some common sense.
  19. Grim1

    EQ Never

No, SoE has had some success recently with Planetside and their version of F2P in their older games (as horrible as it is) must be profitable. So SoE doesn't have everything riding on this. And didn't they get turned down for the massive super multil gazillion dollar budget mmo? But instead...

Another way to add a sense of danger is to change the way leash mechanics and mob run speeds work. Leash mechanics in modern mmo's are all the same. Agro mob, run a certain distance, mob stops chasing you. Every mob has the same leash distance. That is predictable, boring and frankly...

Draegan, every argument you make is for another WoW clone. Do you not see how badly that has worked already for every WoW clone in existance? People are very, very tired of WoW. They keep trying every new mmo coming out hoping for something truly different, but it is always just a pale...

    Defiance

Tabula Rasa was a lot of fun. One of the things that killed it was the lack of viable PvP imo. It was a real pain to do because of flags and guild stuff. It needed PvP zones or some way to jump right into the action. Is there any form easy to get to PvP in Defiance?

I think you are wrong about the need for mass market games to be stupid easy pablum. Without danger there is no fear, challenge or fun. How that danger is introduced is a design decision, but it has to be there in some form or players get bored and lose interest very fast. How I would do...

Heh, and I consider graveyards to be one of the things that killed the danger of EQ. Graveyards could be kept but to keep the sense of danger that made EQ exciting there has to be some sort of risk. Something must be lost if you fail and it can't be just cash. Nobody is afraid to lose coin...

Good idea. Along with that some sort of find / summon corpse item that could be crafted. I know a lot of people hate looking for their corpse and it is a controversial play mechanic. But when it was taken out of EQ a huge part of the sense of danger died.
  26. Grim1

    EQ Never

Of course, that goes without saying. I think everyone who is asking, wants a EQ1 clone that is a full fledged mmo with the old school rules and the new school look. Which you see as being impossible. Personally, I would rather just have the sense of danger EQ1 had, some of the classes...

All of which get easier to use every year and require less manpower. That was my original point. I can see the path to a EQ1 clone but the cliffs you need to navigate to climb that mountain I see as very improbable, and you see as impossible.
  28. Grim1

    EQ Never

Yep, I agree Draegan. And the reasons you gave against are exactly the reasons why investors have refused to back even the possibility of a EQ1 clone. Whatever market there is is too niche in their eyes, and they want to maximise their return. And that is why I have continued to say that any...

First off, the point of my original post was that I don't see EQ1 being redone anytime soon, if ever. The two possibities I listed are it's only hope imo. And they are very dim hopes. But if someone wanted to hang their hat on those hopes then by just looking at the graph Mughal linked you...

Lol, true. But given the humoungous size of the internet population now, you still have young neckbeards willing to play EQ1 with modern graphics in huge numbers. But it is still too niche a market to ever convince the money guys to go for it. There is only 2 ways I see EQ1 being redone...

There are a whole lot more neckbeards on the interwebs now than there were in 1998. So in qwerty's defense there probably is a niche market for a EQ remake with modern graphics. BUT.. You will never convince the money guys to go for it. Like it or not, the cold truth is that investors care...

    Lord of the Rings Online

Hmm, could be. I always just buy the skill with tp asap on my alts. Getting around without a horse all the way to level 20 is a lot of loooong walks. Usually only takes a few hours to earn the tp on a new toon.
  33. Grim1

    Lord of the Rings Online

Riding skill costs 95 tp and a horse is 500 siver. Both of which are easy to earn in game. Doing deeds gives you 5 to 20 tp each. Stuff like killing 60 wolves etc. You can get the horse at level 5 if you buy the skill, you have to wait to level 20 if you are subbed and just want to do the quest.

    Guild Wars 2

Lol, that was an epic post of marketing pablum bs. Looks like they will not be implementing the most important feature for PvE, default overflow for all zones. Guesting will not help players stuck on servers with empty zones. So if you better transfer off now before they force you to pay for it.

I'm sure he saw it differently. His "vision" wasn't implemented perfectly and he got burned for it. But no game ever matched the initial vision. The same is true of every creative endeavor. Reality always changes the end product. Brad's biggest mistake was being naive enough to think the the...

One of the most important things missing from your list is real danger. In EQ it was possible to lose all of your gear and levels, it was pretty hard to do but it was possible. Real danger is almost nonexistant in modern mmos. Eve has it in a fashion, but other than that all mmo's (and even...
