I use wifi to send files over FTP almost weekly to my first gen slim PS3 at 2.1mb/s, works fine. If there's a problem with your connections it's probably just your routers or something. Sure, using ethernet boosts it to like 17-18mb/s, but for normal usage wifi is more than acceptable.

You can use an external USB hard drive if you want. Not sure if you can run games off of one, but you can do music/movies etc. Also, I have a first gen slim and I've never noticed it getting unusually hot.
