There is certainly plenty of room discussing changes in healing mechanics and gameplay.

Get rid of healers and you"ll have to deal with massive potting. As long as you have a DIKU like model that involves group and large group combat situations you"re always going to need a healing mechanism. I don"t care what you call it whether its prevention or whatever. You can"t get rid of...

You"re still going to have other archtypes if the gameplay doesn"t change.

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Once you begin to break out of the DIKU mold of game design, I"ll jump in and help you out with discussions. DIKU is old and stale. You can"t redesign it since it"s been rehashed and redone for decades. You come up with any idea (on class/skill design) and I bet I can point to a MUD that did...

Keep an eye on Jumpgate, I believe they are attempting to do something like this.

Who"s to say Curt"s game is even going to have loot? You may be looting unicorn dust and fairy farts for all you know.

I can see ASOIAF being an rts or single player story driven game but not an MMOG.

Other systems are fine, but to say that the mana system is old and boring is just because you"ve dealt with it for an extended period of time. It"s just a tried and true control mechanism. Everyone can go try to bring Fury Online back if you want. No mana and everything is instant cast. It...

I think you whine too much sometimes. Cast times arn"t a relic it"s just a genre feature. I agree you personal story about your paladin is heart felt, and I really do cry on the inside for you. Maybe Paladins do need an instant cast in that case. But to get rid of cast times as a whole...

What about spells with cast times that when they get interupted it casts the spell anyway but a % of it"s power. No pushbacks at all. So if you begin casting a spell and you get hit at 50% cast time, there is a flat 50% reduction in effect.

I just think it allows for cheesing certain things, but I"m looking at it by putting the movement-casting in a system that exists today that doesn"t have it. It might work in a system that was built around that ability.

I played VG. I played a Druid. It made kiting so easy and it was retarded. It was fun for sure, but I felt like I was cheesing the game at the same time. I"m not saying moving while casting is bad. I"m just saying it could bring about balance issues when applied to a DIKU-Fantasy MMOG. If you...

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Well on sync issues, I"ve rarely seen many issues with that over the years unless it"s a shitty game. As far as "fun" well, maybe, but there are balance issues involved. You can"t generalize it, I think. While a caster might think it"s fun to instant cast everything or be able to cast on the...

Sure it necessary. There are tons of movement required fights. Deciding whether or not to cast a spell is part of the "challenge". You get into all sort of things in terms of PVP and kiting etc if you can cast and move at the same time.

Because if you can cheese it, everyone will. If you can cheese it than your design and development of that encounter is worthless.

I always liked blindfolding a girl and then running popsicle over her body and then when she"s all good and going stick it in her. It"s only awesome the first time though. Surprise factor and all. Make sure it"s sugarless.

Zehn"s right and we"ve all argued this before. "Social Dungeons" are just going to promote camping for gear and if the gear is of equal value to instance gear, it will make the instances obsolete. It"ll turn into another crap fest camp check shit. Meh. You want social dungeons? Open them up...

Without grey items we would never have The Stoppable Force. Or whatever it was called. I got a chuckle when I first saw that.

You"d be surprised. There is a large contingent of people who play these games so much differently than you or I.

But to empty your bags you usually do go to a smaller zone hub of some sorts. To some people you get a sense that there are people out there playing the game as well, so it provides a certain feeling of worldliness as you watch people come and go through vendors, repairing and such.
  25. D

Green Monster Games - Curt Schilling

Grey Vendor items make you have to back and sell them at some points, forcing players back to common areas and perhaps interact with each other. Similar to having to repair armor. Not arguing good or bad, just saying that"s most likely a reason.

I really am beginning to think that levels and exp are really not needed in future games but a difference form of metric for character progression is needed. Rather than hard numbers, visual or responsive forms of progression. Figure that carrot out and you might have something. I"m thinking...
