From what I understand, the game loads the small shit 1st, so it spawns in and falls to the ground, then the large stuff spawns in. There is supposed to be a way to fix it. I think someone mentioned if you place them while in settlement build mode, it helps.

Actual pieces/suit or something else? If you had a custom suit, I know there is a known issue where the companion teleports elsewhere due to a quest and the suit remains where they last left it prior to the teleport. You may want to start there if there is nothing at the actual quest location.

The biggest bonus to melee is the wrestling/fatalities you can execute when using them. Makes up a bit for the lack of variety/wow factor for the weapons themselves.

For melee I have them use a modded world series sluggerFunny as hell when they proc with it and send something flying.

Heh ya, don't let companions get that weapon. I gave Piper my old fully modded out .50 cal sniper rifle and made her manually equip that and gave her a few hundred rounds of ammo for it. She 1-2 shots stuff with it and doesn't seem to bother with other weapons now.
