Because it's a waste of time and energy. The idea that we can beam a signal at a star with the expectation that a recipient is activity listening in our direction at that moment in time is ludicrous.

Facebook Theories (Why everyone I know likes it but me)

I have a Facebook account but I rarely log into it. I might share a link that I find particularly interesting but I never go back to count the likes or replies. I think Facebook, Instagram, etc. interest all boils down to what type of person you are. Personally, I'm highly introverted and...

    The Astronomy Thread

It really doesn't make sense we're alone in the universe. I remember reading that,if a civilization spread out in a paltry .5 the speed of light they could colonize the entire galaxy in a few million years. There has been plenty of time for that. I guess the best we can do is point some...

They do if they detected our radio transmissions. WE don't know they're there. Marvel at my proper use of 'there', 'their', and 'they're'.

Maybe, if they have incredibly, massively sensitive antennae. Earth's first radio waves would be reaching them now. It's highly unlikely they would detect them unless they were specifically looking in our direction.

What? That's not far at all. That means it took 95 years for that signal to reach Earth. If "they" are there, then they're still there.

    Can you touch your toes?

Rickshawed? Why? This is an important god damn question.

    Can you touch your toes?

SHOULD everyone be able to touch their toes or is it impossible for some (sans people with deformities or missing limbs)? I exercise 3-4 times a week and do pre-workout stretches. Been doing this for years and I have never gotten any closer to touching my toes.

    Can you touch your toes?

I've never been able to touch my toes, not even as a child. I'm in excellent physical shape too. I guess I'm just not flexible.

    Investing General Discussion

So I've been watching these videos by Mike Maloney, Hidden Secrets of Money, and I'm seriously considering starting to invest in gold and silver. I have his book, Guide to Investing in Gold & Silver, on order. Has anyone gone this route and have any tips? Specifically, I'm wondering where do...

    Investing General Discussion

Need some advice... As we all know, interest rates for a bank savings account is so stupid low it makes zero sense to keep your money there. So, alternatively, I've been placing any extra cash into a Vanguard ETF - specifically the VTI Total Stock market ETF. I sold all my shares earlier this...

EQ Next: #1 Next gen MMO

Honestly, enough time has passed that they could do this. Take the original game, re-do all the art assets, keep all the original game play elements and release it.

    We the People.

I can envision some future state run not by humans but by an A.I. (yeah, plenty of science fiction literate on this one). But, honestly, this probably has the best chance at a utopia providing said A.I. doesn't decide to exterminate everyone. A dictator that functions off of pure logic...

RIP Jerry Doyle aka Michael Garibaldi of Babylon 5

No kidding. The cast of B5 have been cursed. That said, Babylon 5 is probably my favorite sci-fi series of all time. What sucks is that I try my best to get friends to watch it, but they can never get out of season 1 before giving up.

    Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Yeah, probably a mixture of Bootstrap and jQuery UI. There's the mandate that our app have the "look and feel" of a desktop application. So no huge icons and fonts, nor do we want that flat styling that's prevalent in contemporary CSS frameworks. UIKit is the closest thing I've found so...

Does anyone know of a CSS framework that has styling similar to jQuery UI? That is, it more closely resembles a desktop application style rather than the largish buttons and fonts that have become popular during the mobile era.

So I re-worded my Google search and actually found one solution atUsing Typewriter to Strongly-Type Your Client-Side Models and Services - Kamranicus. Interestingly, Typescript eases this pain with it's interfaces (which I totally forgot about). It still involves updating the Typescript...

See, that's what my point is: there is now extra burden to make sure both the client and server code are in sync. That is why I'm advocating that we keep it all server-side. We, forourproduct, don't really gain anything by investing heavily into a client-side framework. It would be...

Of course, but take for instance this piece of server-side code that takes a DTO and returns a JSON string to the client: Somewhere in your client Javascript you'll be referencing an ".AuthorName". If someone changes "AuthorName" on the server to "AuthorFirstName" or whatever, then you'll need...
