It's more likely they are not creating a multiplayer infrastructure to support any real kind of MP, but being intentionally vague so as not to turn away those who are explicitly interested in MP. I would assume there is no MP in this game, if that's a key feature you want.

Here's a recent interview where he comments on the multiplayer. I, personally, couldn't care less about MP in this game.
