People can always raise their Faction rank to get free legendaries / materials. Hit r6 of Vanguard, got a legendary Scout Rifle and a Mote. You can really raise rep fast by running patrols, especially if you have one or two others doing them with you.

My rank 4 rewards from Vanguard was pretty good; Leggy Helm (I needed it), Leggy Voidwalker bond, Asc. Energy & Shard. I'm not a fan of all the other Factions needing Crucible marks to purchase their items, though if you're a good farmer, you can trade like 50 Material for 1 Crucible Mark.

The guy playing a defiler in that video was only able to kill so many because of the buffs he had from potions, food, castle lord suit (?). If he had been in normal gear using same buffs as others, he would not have survived.
