If they'd had more than one timeout, yeah I wouldn't run it. With just the one, you're looking for the safest way possible to make something happen to bring a realistic shot at a field goal into play. Just the absolute fluke worst possible thing ended up happening. Can happen to anyone.

Honestly though, what bad can happen outside of a fumble? You have a good back, with a timeout in your pocket, who could break off a 15-20 yard run. Get a personal foul for a late hit or a horse collar/face mask...there are multiple possibilities that could happen. If you take a penalty, then...
