Anyone work in engineering? How’s it going?

I am currently a Staff Software Engineer, working in Data Platform Engineering. No shortage of opportunities for my discipline, if you will. Or do you only mean the Professional Engineer certified type roles?

    Guild Wars 3

MMOs need time and gold sinks more than other games. Mounts serve as a decent chase item that gives you a great convenience once you achieve it. If you don't have them you'd still need some other sink.

It isn't an issue for most games. Sekiro and a few others have some very specific weirdness that I could not get to work on any of the distros I have used.

Steam deck portable handheld gaming PC from Valve

Wait SteamOS is coming out for general use? As an old man I don't really want to deal with custom PCs much anymore. I don't mind tinkering with Linux and I enjoy it a lot most of the time. HOWEVER, when I want to play video games for an hour or two dicking around with Linux to get it working...

Steam deck portable handheld gaming PC from Valve

The first steam controller was such an abomination that threw it in my closet and forgot it ever existed. I went back to a 360 controller for years. I moved on to 8bitdo because I switched to a Linux machine and I wanted just one controller to use across my devices. Xbox controller is hard...

IT/Software career thread: Invert binary trees for dollars.

I'd say I do like 25% manual code writing at this point. But only because I am deliberately trying to reduce token expenditure. Also I am learning to use new stuff and I want to be very familiar with how it actually functions rather than just tossing it to AI and not understanding it.

Star Wars Galactic Racer by Fuse Games releasing Oct 6th 2026 for all platforms

I was thinking about how you'd do this. The actual ideal controller for doing this in an honest way would be to use Switch Joycons with motion detection too for maximum lol. Or go all in here:

I've really been putting my Steamdeck and dock to work lately. It is just so quick to switch my monitor over to and get cracking. It runs the old games I play most of the time really well so I have no reason to turn on my old PC unless I want to play Palworld or something. Next imma get this...

    Grand Theft Auto VI

This is a bigger problem and I'd argue has a lot more to do with the maturity of the software industry, if you will. In the 1990s and 2000s a small studio could engineer a lean game engine, such as the Infinity Engine used in Baldur's Gate 1, 2, Icewind Dale, and whatever and build their games...

    Grand Theft Auto VI

This game is an outlier in terms of the AAA studios. Yes it is and will print money. But at the same time even woke gay AAA studios can't afford a $1B+ Dev and marketing cost on a decade timeline like this monstrosity has. Guaranteed it wont have totally unhinged characters like Trevor, Lamar...

    Grand Theft Auto VI

I mean, I am not expecting anything beyond a good aesthetic. We all know what GTA gameplay is like. If the trailer illuminates whatever gimmicks they are introducing this time around that will be good though.

Star Wars Galactic Racer by Fuse Games releasing Oct 6th 2026 for all platforms

The N64 Podracer game that required you to use two N64 controllers at the same time was always really creative. Not necessary with dual joystick controllers but for it's time it was pretty crazy.

My daughter turned 5 recently. Since she turned 4 she has been asking for nothing but a guitar. I played a little as a teenager 20 years ago. We had her do some little toddler piano experience classes just to get her exposed to stuff. I thought she had some mild interest from cartoons or...

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (From Software)

I was on vacation last week and went through the bossfights via remembrances or whatever on my steamdeck. Combat in this game remains the very best in all FROM games. That is if you understand it. The deflection and posture damage systems are just truly satisfying to do. Whenever I play this I...

One of the junior engineers asked me for help on something. I noticed that he was cloning the repo over and over. I asked him why he isn't just branching. Dude tells me that he doesn't like "branch clutter." He clones the repo every single time so he only sees one branch and master. We have 7...

Its more of a rhetorical question. The reason is the lack of engineering chops. You needed to be very cognizant of memory management and lean programming because systems had far less resources. Now that resources are much less of an issue you can yolo everything. But after doing that for 20...

The long term effects of that were catastrophic. Maybe game metrics weren't as advanced then but they had to know how many people actually raided to begin with. I'd bet both my balls the majority of players in Vanilla and BC never raided anything. They probably didn't even do Heroics in BC.

This is definitely a big rabbit hole on game design philosophy. But all AAA games have adopted it because they love "metrics." Most of this revolves around the following principle. If you spend $500k in dev time on your cool hidden dungeon, but only 1% of players ever touch it this was a wasted...
