I know joking, but in all honesty, I just can't watch that type of stuff anymore , not since my accident. Especially if somebody has realistic broken bones or something, I have to fast forward. Used to not be the case, but now it's no dice.

Joking aside, I completely understand. Same reason I can't watch war movies anymore. Especially modern warfare movies. Fucks me up. Palms sweat, heart races. Tried to watch Lone Survivor again not too long ago and ended up having a panic attack instead. I understand you 100%.

Sorry about your accident, but don't worry—this movie isn't entirely a 81-minute torture fest. It might start off like that, but then it progresses into something completely different. I don't know how much of the trailer you saw, but I'll put it in a spoiler for anyone who wants to go in completely blind.

Still no U.S. date on HBO Max SVOD. The page is up but only available in the Latin American region. VOD and torrents have been available for a few months if you missed it, search for "1978 (2024)" and it should show up. NZBGeek still has a working torrent with english subs.

Supernatural/occult is the core. It's not like Hostel or Saw.

The beginning of the movie definitely leans into the torture. Politically driven, then takes a pretty dramatic shift.

The torture runs through over 50% of it's runtime, is not brief, and makes up a huge portion of the setup. So that'd be a skip for you. I checked the timestamp myself.

It's on the level of Saw at times, and there is a scene or two taken directly from Hostel, although the moments are brief.

The tension is present throughout. It uses torture and violence to build it fast. There are no real heroes or relief scenes for the full ride unless you are on a particular side politically.

It's very well acted in the first half. It's like an ultra grimdark Hostel Hellraiser mix. Although I think Hellraiser is much lighter than this. This is super grimdark and delivers on splatter genre almost.

Not what I expected going in. 1h20m runtime. I shut it off about 15 mins early as I had seen enough.

I don't mind torture and gore as long as there is some sort of decent narrative.

It's the dumb shit like hostel or saw that have none or some stupidly thin plot.

If I want to watch something like that I'll just watch actual cartel torture videos.

Ehh it started out interesting then it just became supernatural cult slop. There's a reason why even Spanish critics only gave it 2.5/4 stars max.
