To be fair, the NFL has done a much better job over the last ~3 seasons of scheduling very competitive matchups the first two to three weeks, before they have to acknowledge the reality that different divisional rotations lead to wildly different Strength of Schedules.
The vast majority of Week 1 matchups were divisional rivals. Those teams always play each other close. Hell, take this year: the biggest score differentials no one saw coming (the Colts with +25 over Miami, and the Jaguars at +16 over the Panthers), and half the games were decided by a touchdown or less (well, TD and 2 point conversion for Broncos, but close enough).
