So many games now, I dont think a single list really works.
Super metroid and world of warcraft simply are not the same thing. They do not belong on the same list for games.

1: Super Metroid. to this day the gold standard for story through gameplay. no fucking tutorial slapping you on the face with press A to jump. Gameplay was a natural evolution of exploration. Pretty much the perfect console game. Speedruns, etc. my god. the replay value in alternative gameplay.

2: Tetris. lets be honest. Everyone has played it. Everyone has the song engrained in their brains.

3: Diablo 2:LoD Path of exile finally might be a contender. lets see in 10 years where PoE stands.

4:... really breaking down at this point.. A hundreds of games that are genre defining, breakout success,etc.. Super mario world?, A link to the past? ocarina?, LoL?, symphony of the night? FF6?, DQ8?, SF2?, BG2?, Secret of monkey island3? Wow, if I do include mmos. could really just go on and on. simcity 2000, peggle, minesweeper, wiisports, quake3, nethack, Dwarffortress, ...
At this point it really is just apples to oranges for most, and I can't possibly really say one is better then the other.

I rank my favorites as ones I played the most.

Everquest
Asherons Call 2
Diablo 2
Battlefield 2
Racing games: too many to list and I play them all for 100's of hours.

Ask me again in a month and that list changes, almost put Skyrim on there but still have more time into Oblivion.

Honorable mention to all the supernintendo games before i owned a good pc.
Also Wolfenstien Enemy Territory, holy crap i forgot how much i played that game. And it was free for christs sake!
I could include a few console games, but they never sucked up my time like PC games.
