So, I watched this last night and I really enjoyed it. I think I enjoyed it so much because it reminded me of a movie I watched as a kid back in the 80s. I don't remember the entire movie but I remember it took place in a diner, like a 1950s style diner, a guy answers the pay phone outside the diner, frantic voice warns of incoming nukes, caller goes silent after getting shot and the guy spends the rest of the movie trying to convince the diner patrons nukes are incoming.

Anyway, this movie reminded me of that which is why think I enjoyed it so much. That and this movie didn't explain to the audience what was happening like so many movies do today as if their audiences are morons and don't understand what's happening.

I give this an IGN rating.

I was not a fan of this movie.

besides being very repetitive (it shows the same events from 3 different perspectives, with a LOT of overlap), it had an unsatisfying conclusion, and didn't show off really anyone's acting other than Idris Elba and maaaaybe Jared Harris.

The most true-to-life realistic thing about it, was how unprofessional, unprepared, and downright retarded these people in the highest positions of power really were. They tried to be apolitical, but cmon when you have a black president whose wife is in Kenya, and women in every level of authority, we know which side of the isle this administration is supposed to be.

They gave this a very limited theatrical run in a transparent attempt to make sure that it's eligible for every award, but I'm just not seeing anything here deserving even a nomination for anything.
I couldn't get past the retarded jargon. After a few minutes in, I skipped way ahead and landed on some guy who said Spiral Response, then I noped out. Yeah, start of a nuclear war, and someone doesn't want to risk a spiral response? Kind of a laugh out loud retarded term, anyway. Spiral Response. It fits right in with Star Trek's Spore Drive and Black Alert.

Actually the concept of Spiral Response isn't new. Its the end game of Clancy's Sum of All Fears. US eats a nuke at the Superbowl and has to choose to go full pew pew or to deescalate and the Russians maybe accept a limited proportional response at the worst.

Holy shit, it's got one of the Trilams, the police chief from RoboCop, the villain from Cobra, and I think one of the bounty hunters from Critters. Plus there's a Cuban tranny!

I think I'm going to have to watch this.

This looks just as dumb as that Ice Cube movie where it's just him face timing for 2 hours while FX from straight outta mumbai flash across the screen.

It's not even remotely close to being the epically worse movie ever made. Don't insult WotW with this being a close contender.

Production quality etc was really good. The 3 different views wasn't original but wasn't bad in and of itself. Lack of a cumshot was the big let down. In hindsight i understand her not showing if POTUS retaliates or not because that would have killed the tension. What I think Bigelow should have done is in the final replay extend it and give us the ending of what Idris does since its all focused on him.

The card POTUS reads in the helicopter is a kill code. Extermination.

First go-round was really good. Going through it 2 more times didnt add anything though, IMO.

I feel like this multiple-perspective thing needs to add new information or a new twist to make it worthwhile? Like you see the events leading up to a murder from perspective 1, and it creates the strong impression the butler is the murderer. Than you see it from the perspective of the butler, and he was actually trying to prevent the murder. or somesuch.

Perspective 2 and 3 here were just the same events (and the same zoom call) with other people but no real added value?

yeah skip this pile of shit, interesting idea for a movie - "we have built up a retarded situation where one little thing going wrong could exterminate the human species" but the movie fumbles the idea badly over and over. Some of the Tom Clancy military-technobabble is fun but there is too little of that and too much repeating the same stuff over and over, and the ending is a fuck you to viewers.

Instead of making an ending that lets viewers think about the movie it actively antagonizes viewers which requires an insanely skilled writer/director (Scorcese, David Fincher, etc) to pull and Bigelow doesn't have the goods.

Its not the idea of the movie/ending, its entirely the execution. A better person could have pulled it off like Tony Gilroy or younger Ridley Scott. Two acts, more needed in end.

the only real lesson from the movie is if you have 50 nuke killers you launch 20-30 of them one after the other, not fucking TWO

amazing cast though, wanted to see way more of Rebecca Ferguson, Tracy Letts (stratcom general), Jared Harris

instead of this watch Paradise TV show, similar idea and at times equally stupid but also hilariously fun

I think they allude to the idea that had the nuke been tracking to DC they would shot a whole lot more at it. But that could also have come from this thread. They have kind of blurred at this point.
