Meh. They took the 'figure it all out yourself' thing just far enough to detract from the game a bit I think. A game like Subnautica got it more or less just right, a few tiny breadcrumbs to point you along but you still have to explore and work though it on your own. Here, I had no idea how important it was to lock in a bunch of mutations via generations before you racked up a bunch of evolution feats, so now if I try to continue my game I will run out of time because every time I evolve I jump forward like a million years. The world isn't actually all that big but it seems like it because travel is so slow. Your dude is slow as balls on the ground and trees aren't any faster because of all vertical movement and the need to be super careful about your jumps so that your retarded ape doesn't jump right through the canopy and plummet to an injury or death.

I get that they wanted a very minimalist UI, but how the hell does my ape not know how hungry or thirsty he is?

Some of the apes I find in the wild I just can't figure out what to do with them, I have offered them everything I have discovered. So you're right that at times it's just frustrating. Because you don't have a compendium I'm forced to try to memorize the effects of the different foods. Sometimes things that seem like they would work, like knocking down a beehive with a stick, don't.

I wanna see more games that try to relate what living in the world of our earliest ancestors would be like, so I'm glad to see some enthusiasm for this title. Imma play it eventually.

Yeah I rescued one that was cradling an arm, which means it had an injury and needed khat/horsetail. But it was also bleeding and I had assumed that was the bigger problem. Spoiler if you don't want it.

Rescuing damn dirty foreigner apes
  • Holding their throat or vomiting -> Pierced Coconut / Berries
  • Holding their arm -> Khat Leaves / Horsetail
  • Holding their head -> Honey / Pierced Coconut
  • Holding their stomach -> Any food that is safe to eat
  • Scared -> Soothe using prompt
You get honey by stripping a grass frond and poking the stem into the hive.

And yeah it's a pretty unique concept which is why I haven't put it down yet.

Can you advance far enough in this game to open a couple Quiznos franchises? They keep closing the ones near me and I only get to see the big Q on road trips now.

The Matrix 4 filming hasn't started yet.

This definitely gives a strong tech demo vibe as everyone else has stated, but man, it sure has potential to be really interesting. Hoping this is a game that actually gets the attention needed, and in a few months is a big sleeper hit. Definitely keeping an eye on it. Absolutely must find the Obelisk/monolith!

I mean they took the concept 'core gameplay loop' rather literally. You'll experience 95% of the game in the first hour and then spend the entire rest of the game repeating that 95% as you slowly get better/faster at it, and periodically discovering what little bits you didn't experience immediately.

Like imagine playing Terraria but you had to start from scratch every two hours and couldn't use anything more advanced than copper.

I'm super advanced in neuron upgrades and way behind on feats, I'm on my second species upgrade not sure how many there are.

This game is like a really terrible porno.

It ends as soon as you get an erectus.

I just hit the final species, I'm enjoying this game and the more I play it and look at reviews, the vast majority of them simply didn't understand how the game worked. Now that may be a legitimate complaint, but in this case it seems necessary. If they explained too much you would run through the content way too quickly.

I'd agree that there is Core gameplay that doesn't change from the 1st hour to the 30th, but I was legitimately engrossed in the exploring and slowly feeling more and more a bad ass as I evolved. There is a large complaint amongst people that got further into it that killing elders is necessary to slow time but my play thru has proven that wrong. I have not had to kill a single elder and I have been able to complete 97% of the neuron tree while I'm at the final species which seems pretty balanced to me.

I think if you understood the mechanics well (probably from spoilers on reddit) I could see how you could powergame yourself into a corner but I just played through naturally and it came out rather balanced on advancement thought the game wouldn't protect it from becoming askew.

Just need to do some final exploring of the desert and trek to the ocean and I'm about done. I read they had planned to do 3 games in the series and will definitely checking them out if they do.
