This is probably a thing - I rarely shoot first and will usually identify myself before the other raiders sees me. I usually get chill solo lobbies.
I wouldn’t be shocked if they could tell if you’re intentionally initiating combat vs people vs defending yourself after being attacked

It would be easy to tell I think. If you are consistently the one to do damage first to someone else, you are the initiator of PVP. Most PVPers are cowards and will only shoot first when someone has their back turned, shooting a person looting, or shooting someone that is engaged by an Arc.

There's a YouTube video where a guy tested the theory you guys are referring to.
Granted, it's one anecdote, but his findings were extremely persuasive.
If you genuinely don't fuck with people, it's seems likely that the matchmaking algorithm is going to do its best to pair you with players taking the same approach and if you are one of the guys that is just blastin' everyone, then you're going to get the same treatment.
He also stated that, in his experience, it only takes a couple of raids with out-of-character behavior to go from one grouping to the other.
I haven't taken a scientific approach, but my own experience(s) feel like they mirror this theory pretty well.

This is good, in theory; however, the cred system encourages you to light up other raiders for creds or whatever. That immediately makes newbies think it is normal and could fuck up their matchmaking into something that makes them not want to play anymore.

Had some weirdness last night queuing as a group of three. We got into one Matriarch Spaceport round and ran into a solo-queue guy. We initially figured this dude was trying to set us up for an ambush with his buddies, but he ran with us for like 10 mins and legitimately seemed to be solo. We ran into someone else and they were also surprised we were a trio-queue. We even shot each other to prove that we were, in fact, in a group and the guy was shocked.
After like 20-ish minutes we exfilled without issue.
The karmic balance came due a few rounds later when some people were landing high speed headshots through a window and racks of gear. Its possible that they were just really really skilled but we went back to the same spot next round and it seemed virtually impossible to hit anything, much less all headshots on people sliding etc

I know your work schedule seems to get in the way a lot, would like to hand you them this weekend so we dont get down to the line. I've been riding 230/280 space since clearing up some killing trial enemies. 200 if I'd just delete all the big bot cores I have etc. Need to get on so I can see what else I can give you that you need/vendor for $$$ if your not maxed out already or otherwise let you liquidate some space because you can just rebuy many of the basics with cash/seeds (Have a few stacks of 100 I could hand you that would give you more flexibility than sitting on a lot of random crap)
