yeah. its crazy how young he is.

Backrooms is like Creepypasta, slenderman, SCP foundation etc. not owned by one person. a group meme/exercise of people collectively creating and telling creepy stories, and forming a mythology.

the Backrooms is a combination of a few things. Liminal spaces. quiet dread. the familiar becoming unfamiliar.
Some classic examples. Hotel hallways. or office hallways. hallways after hallways of rooms looking exactly the same. getting lost. no one around.
stadiums, malls, empty highways. places that normally have tons of people. empty. its unsettling.

the familiar not quite right. Classic creepy. like Amity horror's Red room. Like walking into an house for sale, and finding the table set with 3 chairs, a fourth chair over by the oven. 6 knives on the table, and a spoon.. Why? what scenario could have set this up?
The child door in Coraline. Buying a house, and in one of the room is a 2 ft door, thats locked. you don't have the key.. and you know there is no opening on the other side of the wall. its weird, and creepy, and you wouldn't be able to get it out of your head.
Amity's red room. normal house.. with a closet with soot/burn marks around the door. inside its painted a bright red. your mind struggles to come up with a story to explain it... and none of it makes sense.
these oddities then compound, making less and less sense. getting weirder and weirder. until its clear, its not just weird stories. its some alien force attempting to recreate what it percieves as our reality. (possibly from stolen memories.)

imagine you were to draw and create an anthill for an ant. you may have seen an anthill, and can try to recreate one as you think it should look like. but it would never be correct. you aren't an ant. the pheromones, the correct placement and distances would be wrong.

Kane specifically had his own version, and amazingly good videos. largely ignoring what everyone else was doing.

some examples:

Crazy part is this shit was done in Blender. by like a 19 year old..

Kanes versions do specifically have monsters in them.
A bunch of SCP shit is 1:1 to Backrooms. the endless stairway down in the college utility room for example.
Some are just endless mazes trapped forever. some have the implication of monsters, but its more the signs and hints of one, noises, etc. but not actually seeing it.
some is the room itself is a monster. the slide in the woods.

I don't want to click your spoiler thing but can you give a review that doesn't have spoilers. I'm honestly really interested in this movie because it just looks so out there and I don't know anything about the game or whatever the hell is based on. I just like the sort of stuff, and I've been hoping it was a good film.

Liminial space horror is just an expressive way to do psychological horror. With the way the Backrooms work its all about generational trauma, quiet dread, the characters psyche, and creating moments that are creepy because it combines elements that dont naturally fit well together. You and your wife should like this a lot.

You can watch Kane Parsons YouTube Backrooms series as a precursor to understand the concept but its not required for the movie and the film does a good job of being its "finalized" form.

I read some article years back about the anthropologist that was studying these online mythologies coming about because he thought it offered some insight into how humans probably created mythologies in general going back thousands of years: a sort of loose collaborative process that evolves through different versions until one or a few primary strains win out and spread further

Yeah, I watched this earlier today. As someone noted above, Backrooms is well suited for a home viewing and does not require a theatrical experience. Hoping to support the independent film makers, I chose this over Masters of the Universe, though the latter now appears to be in more need of audience support (and sounds like it deserves it).

While Backrooms isn't the Lovecraft/cosmic horror experience I had initially hoped, it remains super creepy and bizarre. The ending left me somewhat indifferent but it works well enough overall.

I'll definitely watch it when it's available at home, and I agree it doesn't look like it requires going to the theater to see it.

I went to see this, the first 'horror' movie I've been to in probably two decades, only because I was really intrigued by the whole backrooms story and thought Kane Pixels did some really good work.

It was... ok. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it, but I thought it ended too soon. The runtime is 1:45 which is slightly less than the average, but it does in an interesting enough place. Personally I think the movie ends on top of a narrative cliff that it had been slowly climbing up to the whole time, and then just ends. It does give away some of the backstory of Kane's rendition of backrooms that was until now only speculation on YT channels like The Film Theorists and whoever, but it's pretty stingy in that regard. He's got himself a legitimate franchise and a mandate from millions of greenbacks to make at the very least another one.

This was neat, worked pretty well, and definitely doesn't need the theater. It may even be better alone at home. I could just be saying this because a mother brought her 10 year old that didn't have an inside voice or inner monologue to a movie that makes you ask questions.

I think the horror act (3ish) felt a bit out of place, but it was fine. The initial setup and creepy discovery portions were good and it had an ending like it should.

Jeez between this and Obsession I feel spoiled.

This was amazing and right up my alley. People in the thread have referenced a ton of stuff but if you've ever wanted to read a book that has as similar feel give House of Leaves a twirl. It is a frustrating read but that adds to the claustrophobic, nonlinear, and paranoid sense throughout it.

I thought it was okay. Had the whole theater to myself. There were some good jump scares and eerie moments, but the story didn't make much sense to me. I didn't really get the ending either and there isn't much to speculate about. In contrast, Obsession has more to think about and theories for how the wish worked and stuff. And the actress in that was fun to watch. This one doesn't have any performances like that.

Between this and Obsession I would definitely recommend the latter. This one...maybe if you're into the creepypasta / SCP stuff.

Tuned out in the finale. Got some of the message, but didn't care for it, and wasn't really interested after the reveal. Id say I intentionally missed at least 20 minutes.

Looking forward to something more straightforward in the genre like Obsession.

I got motion sick during the hand cam stuff and still liked the movie. It might be the only movie to achieve that. I think every other time a movie has made me motion sick I've left the theater with an unfavorable view of the thing. Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity would be contemporary examples of that.

Horror is a very personal thing and this didn't connect with me in such a fashion (did not find the story scary) but I was engaged the entire time.
