Beat it last night. Definitely missed a few things but got about as close to 100% as I'd realistically want. We did the hero/nice playthrough but I can see the appeal of durge.
Looks like we hit right on 130h. I think if I had played solo I would've chopped a lot of hours off, but she really wanted to do everything. Also she felt emotionally conflicted when it came to times I would probably just kill the NPCs.
Anyways it was really fun, and now I feel like there's a void in my life since we have been playing this for a couple months together now. Thanks for letting me live journal my progress.

Have yall played Divinity: Original Sin 2? It has very similar multiplayer but it is a lighter game with a more open skill/class system with different mechanics (although you can see how they transferred over as much as possible to BG3). Some people don't like the Dutch humor, but I never found it overly distracting. It also has a more Ultima 7 like crafting system, like a hammer + nails = lockpicks.

I would probably recommend waiting a bit on DOS2 if you just finished BG3. I made the mistake of playing it immediately after BG3 and I just kept finding myself missing BG3 style mechanics and graphics quality since BG3 was still so fresh in my mind, so I lost interest pretty quickly.

I did start it a few years ago, got really invested and then the game kept crashing to desktop and id lose a bunch of progress. I haven't picked it back up since but we may look into it.

What about Owl Cat's Wrath of the Righteous? I really want to play that game, but the aesthetics aren't nearly as pleasing as BG3. And I'm iffy on the combat system with 'pause' mechanics.

I hated that game. It's all long form writing, no cutscenes or voice acting. And written like shitty Twilight fan fiction. It's like the whole story was written by fat lesbians.

If that's your main concern, there's no worry there - it supports full turn based mode.
Now as for recommendation - I am guessing you aren't a Pathfinder expert, or you would have already played it. So - how would you rate yourself on the neckbearded autist scale ?
0 - do not recommend
1-5 - you will probably need to either follow a build guide from the internet or play on easy. Unlike BG3, you can absolutely make the wrong choices in character builds, in ways that will almost completely brick your build. If you are ok with that then thumbs up.
6-7 - wotr explores high level builds in a way unlike any other I have played, especially the story consequences of having that level of power - your class and build has a big impact on the late game story. It also lets you flex those high level abilities that usually only turn up after the game is effectively over. Worth it for the unique scale alone, strong recommend.
8+ - this is probably the greatest rpg of all time for your tastes. You will need every drop of insane min-max theorycraft as well as relentless determination to make it through the highest difficulty level. There's huge scope for character building and min-maxing with the multiple characters and the ascensions.

You don't even need to multiclass in WOTR to beat it on CORE difficulty. Some of the best classes in the game don't want any multiclass.
- Sylvan Sorcerer 20 - pet is probably better than your main tank, and gets all the best arcane buffs in the game
- Community/Animal Domain Cleric 20 - Guarded Hearth is probably the best single buff in the game, the pet is another tank, plus they get all the best divine buffs, heals, cures available
- Slayer Deliverer 20 >> Legend >> Demonslayer Ranger 20: probably the best passive damage possible. Fights starts and shit just dies instantly
- Bard / Skald / other hybrids 20: extra classes don't help much
- Pet classes 20: multi-classes into non-pet classes nerfs the pet
- 2hand fighter and Staff Monk: absurd damage and no extra classes wanted
Extra classes in your tanks will definitely help, but usually its not that many levels required. But for buffing and dealing damage multi-classing absolutely not required.

I usually search for 'op' build guides on YouTube and roll with one of those. I totally get that just picking shit that 'sounds good' probably won’t cut it. I also don’t have the patience or desire to build something from scratch on my own.
The biggest turn-off with Wrath is the walls of text. I’m not sure I can deal with all that reading, unless it’s REALLY damn good.

Patfinder and WOTR are pretty intricate in building even if you stay away from multi-classing. You need to know which skills (feats) to pick and in what order to make shit work. Its like this with all these PnP game systems to some extent. Some are easier to navigate than others, but when it comes to Pathfinder, yeah its pretty intricate. There is shit like attacks of opportunity which you need to build into in order to maximize your melee character for example. They would probably work without, sure, but youre essentially gimping yourself without knowing some of this shit. And on top of all this, in WOTR you have mythic levels and skills to choose as well, thus adding more complexity to an already complex system.
I mean its great when you learn some ofthis shit and start building out characters, tons of options, probably more than any other video game like this. But there is a learning curve.

True, although I think core is pretty forgiving? Regardless, easiest solution is to grab the Toybox mod (LINK), as it has the best respec option that I found. Then just respec if things get too messed up.
The game also has the option to turn on auto-leveling for companions, which picks a preset path for each, so new people to Pathfinder only need to focus on their main character.

My question: IS the combat has fun and engaging as BG3's? I played a few hours into Wrath and combat seemed kinda 'meh' to me.

I think it is. The two hardest Pathfinder settings are much harder than the hardest BG3 difficulty on release. Overall I like the turn based tactical combat of the Pathfinder game rules over the DnD5e rules. They are more complex and have more spells/abilities.
The Pathfinder game's power curve is probably a bit more stretched out before you start getting into the good combat with tons of options. I would guess that going from level 12 in BG3 directly to level 1 in Kingmaker or Wrath would make the Pathfinder games feel reallllly slow. The Pathfinder games start picking up around level 5 or 6 and then, in Wrath, it really gets going when you pick your epic path.
In Kingmaker you are going to ~level 16 before the end of the game, but the mechanics are in the game to go to 20, if you want to eak out every ounce of XP. In Wrath you are going to level 20, plus 10 epic level, or level 40 (two classes to level 20 if you pick that path or how ever you want to mix/match multiclass levels).

Combat in Wrath gets better and better as the more you build out your party. Wrath has like 1000% more combat shit then BG3 ever did with their builds. Think of ADnD 5e as Patfinders little kid brother. Their set pieces are also way grander. BG3 looks better, but the fghts and dungeons in Wrath are truly epic. I played it so that on trash fights I would use the pause option, and just let my party annihilate shit, but for the larger mini boss and boss fights I would go into turn based. Or you could just go full turn based for every combat encounter but then the game would take twice or even 3 times as long.
I mean they are not the same games. BG3 is a more refined experience, But dont sleep on Pathfinder. I dont think you get into any of the good shit in Pathfinder builds until like lv 8-10.

Core is not especially hard but it's by no means forgiving, straight up rules as written. Full damage crits, fully populated encounters with enemies who dont have reduced stats, no more 1 free death per rest. I played through core on a highly optimized build and after some hiccups during the first couple levels (seriously that water elemental is a BITCH) I absolutely steamrolled through the game I really should have either gone with a simpler build or played through on hard instead.
