Did not see posted yet, but here is a rumor that BGIV is being made by... the lead from Veilguard. Yikes.

From the article:

"Dragon Age: The Veilguard director Corinne Busche has been quietly hired by Wizards of the Coast after leaving BioWare.

Corinne has been placed in the newly formed Skeleton Key Studios as a game director, which might develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

Wizards of the Coast kept the hiring process of the director discreet, likely to steer away from any controversies."

The worst thing about it is that it's going to fool a metric fuckton of people who don't pay attention into buying it and then once they learn it is not Larian and the story is shit they will make BG5 and it will absolutely tank. So the ramifications of the story you just posted won't be felt for at least a decade and no one at those companies cares because of short term profit goals.

What's a bigger fuckup, ruining your relationship with Larian Studios after they make one of the greatest RPGs of all time for your flagship franchise, or hiring the team that created one of the biggest RPG failures of all time?

Would be so incredibly disappointing. Not surprising though. Companies these days seem to love to go from something amazing to complete shit.

Like Ariakas said though the vast majority will buy BG4 because BG3 was/is so amazing. So its going to take until the next BG after that(if there is one) before any ramifications hit. So this person will have already helped make the game, got paid and maybe a bonus because it will sell so well via BG3 rep and probably moved on before any kind of backlash hits.

If this turns out true and they turn BG4 into another veilguard.

Nah most gamers know Larian is the reason for bg3 success. You'd have to be an imbecile to think wotc had anything to do with it. Larians new IP will sell like gang busters and trannie gate 4 not so much.

You give vast majority way too much credit. If it was a more well known developer, sure. Something that is almost a household name. But WoTc or larian? No and the new one is Skeleton Key games. The only thing most will recognize is the Baulder's Gate name.

The real question: Are they going to reuse the BG3 cast? It would be a shame if they reused them, but had much worse writing and butchered the characters.

Word of mouth and honest coverage online will help squash a lot of the BG4 numbers if its made by this terrible team. I myself telling family and friends alone would kill 10+ copies if I warned them.

Did we really need a new thread for an unsubstantiated rumor? This should be in the BG3 topic. This person "might" work on an unannounced title that is probably still a decade out, holy shit let's all clutch our pearls.

There will be only one character creation option: a disabled, black tranny. All the characters in the game will also be disabled black trannies. The only way you can interact with them is through graphic sex scenes. The bad guy will be a straight, white dude wearing a red hat. There, it writes itself!

They have to build from ground up since studio never share their tech or data except if one own the other one. The characters are own by WotC but they won't have the data. Even in this case it's complicated from my experience. BG4 is most likely 5-6 years away. If Larian did it it would probably took them 3-4 years but in this case I lean toward 6. I'm curious to see if they will try the Larian approach and do a early access really early and lets the buyer do the beta testing. ( I have nothing against it. It's rather smart TBH but I think the list of studio that can pull it off is rather short. )

That studio has some pretty big shoes to fill and it's going to be hard.

In my experience new games usually take 6-7 years and follow up 3-4. I think Wukong took 6 years production and the director told he personally worked on it for 8 years.

larian already severed ties with WotC so they weren’t making BG IV anyway. Not that anyone else could make a BG that comes close to what Larian did.

From what I recall

1) Wotc had terminated the team members that originally worked with Larian
2) Wotc wanted BG4, but wanted a larger share of the profits and greater creative control input
3) Larian said “lol no”

I don’t blame Larian for walking away

That studio has some pretty big shoes to fill and it's going to be hard.

Big shoes to fill is a bit of of an understatement with BG3 being one of the most critically acclaimed (by reviewers and audience alike) games of all time and from a studio that specializes in RPGS with an already existing engine that they could use to modify to make the game (if you recall at the launch of early access, the game literally looked like Divinity Original Sin 2, down to the reuse of nearly all icons in the game for loot and the likes).

So far, to me, the fourth Mass Effect was the biggest downgrade from a franchise standpoint that I know of. Granted the end of 3 at release wasn't good, but that was more them not knowing how to end it rather than not knowing how to build on the two previous games. Then the fourth game came along, big hype since the original series was so good, and it was so bad it became a meme. If there wasn't a mass effect 1-3 ahead of it, it might have been a "hey, ok first try, quite a bit of jank, but let's see where this goes", but going by the legacy of the first three, no good will was given.

With Baldurs Gate you have 1-2 which were iconic generational games. Larian actually manged to build upon that franchise by making a current generational RPG.

Starting BG4, from scratch... with no assets? With WOTC having far more control?

My prediction for the future - No chance for early access. Lots of pre-order bonuses with things like "play 3+ days early". Review embargo until launch day. Take as much money as they can. Then queue "the gamers are at fault!" articles as the franchise dies.

Be funny if Larian released whatever new game they are working on at around the same time.

I was seeing a girl who worked on BG3 during the pandemic up until early 2022. I’ve heard several stories. It didn't seems like an easy relation. At least Larian did succed in the end.
