Looking for some suggestions on Anti-Virus software. Preferably free or one that is a one time purchase where the license does not run out or have to be renewed.

Just use Microsoft's it's free and lightweight. Other then that, don't be a fucktard and browse porn sites without noscript, etc.

Not sure if it can be an anti-virus specifically or just a scanner, but I've always had great success with Malware Bytes

Yep I use MSE based on the countless recommendations from people here. I also run Malware Bytes like once a month for peace of mind.

Anyone know if Microsoft Security Essentials works with Windows 8.1?

I use ESET NOD32, and we have just switched over to Kaspersky at work ... their newest product is very nice.

Microsoft Security Essentials isn't as good as it was just a year or so ago.

I'd probably recommend some combo of a good antivirus (AVG, AVAST, Ksspersky) + a Malware/spyware scanner like Malwarebytes.

Set both to scan nightly when you aren't using your PC, I set mine to run at like 4am.

Kaspersky is the best, for the time being. Norton is pretty good, too...for the time being. I rarely see KAS for sale, but it's well worth the price. Norton can be had for as little as $20/3 PC if you shop around.

MSE is so ineffective that there's no point in even using it.

I use Norton Internet Security. As mentioned, dont pay the full price. Wait until you find the <$30 3PC key offers.

The only thing that bugged me about Norton AV was its insistence of full scanning any time my PC was idle. It was installed on my 2nd PC that had a dumb BIOS that would ramp up my CM 212 to full speed at the drop of a hat. InstaLOUD. I'd have to set Norton to silent mode to quieten things down. Not really Norton's fault, though...other than no selection for disabling full scans on idle. I haven't paid more than $30 for 3/PC license, which is a great deal.

I don't use coupons or imaginary deals, and in that light, KAS really isn't ever offered on special.

I've got Avast Free installed on my new Craptop, but I'm already tired of the BUY THIS pop ups every hour. It may rate well, but the pop-ups kill the free joy.

and where's that coming from?
Um, from Microsoft themselves...

Microsoft has admitted Windows users should install antivirus above and beyond its own Security Essentials, describing its protection as merely a "baseline" that will "always be on the bottom" of antivirus software rankings.

The top 2 that are highly recommended are Avast and ESET. I use both Avast (Desktop) and ESET (Laptop) and both are lightweight and not annoying. I haven't used Kaspersky in several years, but when I did it was annoying as hell. Worse than having an actual virus. Anyways, they all run various specials all the time. Just keep an eye out on Slickdeals.

Another great product which does not replace your AV software, but complements it is Malwarebytes Pro. That also goes on sale a lot as well. I run those together as well as practice "safe" browsing hehe. If you ever had to go visit a questionable site, you could also use Sandoxie.

Might have to pick that up. I had a trojan on the work computer awhile back, malewarebytes pro couldn't even detect it much less remove it. Did a little googling and a free program from Kaspersky labs found and removed it. It didn't even haggle me about buying anything so I really should support them.

Are you guys actually getting viruses? I feel like it's been at least 3 years since I had one, maybe more. Even my dumbest relatives haven't called me about viruses in years.

Have you checked their computers? I've noticed over the last few years malware has evolved quite a bit. The viruses themselves are less obtrusive and seem to be mostly in the background collecting data and slowing things down. I don't have relatives calling me to report major problems anymore either, but I seem to find a bunch of malware every time I visit and happen to check their computers.

I have a new computer in the mail and want to get some pro-active protection on it from day one. I ordered Kasperky Internet Security 2014 package.

It is a 3 key package. Anyone know if you can use the keys on the same computer for the next 3 years? Or, do they have to be used on separate comps?
