Not an original story like Black Phone 1.

Its basically a Nightmare on Elm Street remake using Black Phone.

Think they should have either done a prequel with Ethan Hawke or just came up with a better idea than ripping off Elm Street.

There's several reasons. Some of them require heavy spoilers.

The biggest non-spoiler reason is that Black Phone 2 has a lot of exposition occurring where the characters are explaining the plot by screaming at each other.

The decision to make it Elm Street took the life out of Ethan Hawke's character. It became more of a gimmick because the movie doesn't focus on him. He's just there to bang pots and pans, make noise, raise hell rather than wondering what is going on you just want it to be over.

Once you saw that he's doing mind-games ghost haunt stuff rather than existing in the real world the thing took a massive shit. The plot device just sucked as they tried to explain and define the universe it's taking place in. There was definitely a way to do Elm Street and make it work. The exposition sucked as much as the premise for this sequel.

I shut it off in Act 3 during the "final conflict". Just terrible.

They took a monster who was not supernatural and had no idea the supernatural things were happening and turned him into general spooky supernautal monster man. Ethan Hawke was great, but the story sucked cause of what they did to his character.

It is aggressively Nightmare on Elm Street. If you liked the story about a kidnapped boy being aided by the ghosts of his captor's victims well this doesn't really have that beyond the superficial.
