Agree with the cut Vegas down to 3 days idea. Way more to do in CA.

Anyone been to St George Spirits in Alameda? Looks like you can get the ferry from San Francisco to fairly close to it?

You have to take the ferry from Alameda to Oakland. You can then take it from there to SF - Pier 41, Ferry Building or AT&T Park.

I don't know why anyone would ever go to Alameda though. Fuck that place.

Going to be spending a weekend in SF with my girlfriend in mid July. Any recommendations for specific neighborhoods to get a hotel, good restaurants would be appreciated. We're only there for 2 full days (3 nights though), and I'm not sure if there are any touristy things you have to do in SF. Was planning on just wandering around between restaurants/bars and maybe doing some shopping.

Thanks.

Union Square is the best spot to stay. South of Market has good Mexican food places, Little Italy does have good Italian restaurants while Chinatown does not have good Chinese restaurants. Just use Yelp.

The Mission has the best Mexican food. Just go to any taqueria on Mission St between 16th and 26th streets. Epic Roasthouse in the Embarcadero area has a badass burger called the Explosion Burger - ask for both cheeses on the top and inside. Golden Boy and Tony's have the best pizza and both are in North Beach (Little Italy) along with a number of bars with solid happy hours. Dottie's True Blue Cafe has bomb breakfast but be prepared to wait in a lengthy line. It's hard to find bad food in SF. As Adam said, use Yelp. Yelp is very reliable here. Anything four stars or above tends to be good.

So thought I'd bump this as I have some more general questions and figured I'd lump them all in one spot.

1. Are Santa Monica Pier and/or Venice beach worth going to? Have always wanted to go to them but after watching some youtubes it seems they are just full of homeless drunks and crackheads. I guess I'd be going for the experience anyway but would rather feel safe so I don't know.

2. Anything round Anaheim that needs to be seen/done that isn't a theme park?

3. Will be renting a car for 3 days, any weird road rules that I need to be aware of? I seem to recall a buss driver saying something about some of the lans in LA having a $3k fine if you drive in them at the wrong time or with wrong number of people in your car, some shit like that...so any advice would be most appreciated.

4. Commerce Casino or the Bike the better option if I'm in Anaheim with a car?

5. Want to bring my phone with me so I have my auths for google, wow etc but fuck roaming costs....what's the cheapest way to get a sim with data plan for a month over there, pref for ~ $30 and with 2Gb+ data since I'll want to use google navigation rather than paying for gps option on rental.

Never been to the pier, but Venice beach is worth going to at least once, just for the freak show. After that though, not really worth going to again. It helps to go on a weekend during the summer. Not sure how it'd be in the "off season."

As far as driving, I haven't spent that much time in LA, but I'd imagine they're just talking about HOV lanes. Unless you've never been to a city before, they shouldn't be a foreign concept.

No idea what a HOV lane is, not an acronym used over here.

ok, googled and yeah do understand, they're called Transit Lanes here so not a foreign concept and should be useable given will be 2 of us.

Another one I remembered when I was in Clemson once was being able to turn right on red lights most of the time....is that correct or does it still need to be posted? and how about U-turns, do they need posted permission or generally allowable?

Santa Monica is worth a trip id say.

On my theme park trip to Anaheim ive found nothing worth of special interest, cept if youre into hotels or banking districts. At least thats what it seemed to me.

It's generally safe to assume that right on red and U-turns are legal if there isn't a sign specifically saying otherwise.

Are you guys including 3rd Street Promenade as part of the "Santa Monica pier?" Cause that place is pretty ballin' if the weather is good. Live street shows, homeless performers (can you spot the differences?), etc.
