NGL , kings with special abilities etc? I'd call it a miss for any true chess fans. Do miss that OG battlechess. I was entertained enough to just watch the demo on my discs off MAC magazine or whatever it was my dad had.
Holy fuck my old regular nintendo era computer games has a few stupid ones I'd love to play
One was you had to cross a room in your paper airplane and avoid fans and use drafts etc, at all times losing altitude.
Old school Joust.
And forget name, but you played a bored office worker, spend the whole game in your office chair with a staple gun as your only weapon against some kind of robot office bot that went rogue. Coffee was your health power up. And the movement was fun because you only could kinda move backwards rapidly because you could push off, but forward was slow because you had to kinda inch with your legs like in a real chair.
And Albion, the centipede kinda shooter thing.

My own Dr retarded moment.

I just remember getting a cheap ass chess set for Christmas one year and my dad teaching me how to play, and then he got a copy of battle chess for the computer, and I would play it for hours. I'm no chess wizard by any stretch of the imagination, but I loved that game. Part of the fun was throwing matches so you could see the different animations between pieces.

Now if you really wanted to turn the board on its head, Archon on old computers was also the bees knees. I think there was even like a weird dungeons and dragons version of Archon that came out from SSI.

Archon was sick, played that so much growing up. On Commodore 64, then NES, then PC.
