Got one of the Leap Pad 2's from my grandma for my daughter. Holy crap the rape they are handing down for the games and downloads. The things look like they were coded by the children themselves. Looks like you can bargain shop a bit buying the cartridges used on Ebay. If you are considering picking one of these up don't. Just get them a tablet.

If you're unscrupulous you can get the games and books from the usual places.

A few years ago my wifes grandmother got our son a Leap Pad, most games were like $20, found a torrent on kat.ph that had all of them bundled together. Thank god I didnt waste all that money, because even at 2 1/2-3yrs old he got bored of the damn thing pretty quickly. Now he is 5 and we just got him a Kindle HDX and put the educational and a few fun games on there, waaaaay better than a Leap Pad or similar. The only web browsing he does is look up videos on youtube. A few filters for when he is on it and theres no chance for him to wonder off to a place like this or a porn site ;p The Nabi and Tabeo are probably the best for kid tabelts. I dont know much about the Nabi but the Tabeo runs on Android Jelly Bean. The biggest pain with the Tabeo is the parental control, after you disable most of the stuff and download the Amazon Appstore, its a pretty solid tablet.

I'd still recommend a Kindle Fire with nice case and the FreeTime service over the other Android alternatives.

My little 9 year old nephew got a Kindle Fire HD for Christmas and I was helping him get it set up. Man, that thing pisses me right off. No access to the Google Play store at ALL. I still have some credit at the google play store from when I bought my Nexus and I was going to purchase him a couple games he wants but you can't do it on a Kindle. Can't use the google play store app without rooting, and can't do it through the google play website either. Lame. What's the point of a Kindle being an android tablet if you are cut off from google functionality?

On the flip side, I bought my mom a new Nook HD+ for Christmas(the 9-inch one) and it's badass. Comes with Chrome as the default browser which was awesome, and a ton of useful apps preinstalled like Pandora, Spotify, etc. All that for $150 for the 32GB version.

I can't fathom why people get Kindles over Nooks(if you're going to go with an e-reader device rather than a straight android tablet). Nooks are superior in almost every way possible, you can buy books from any source, they are compatible with all file types, they aren't nearly as restrictive as amazon and their Kindles.

Yeah you have to root your device to do it. Not going to do that to my nephews tablet as I don't want to have to manually update it for him until the end of time.

True, I hadn't thought of that aspect of it.

A friend at work was telling me about these super-cheap Android tablets they sell in department stores and drug stores and stuff that he got for his nephews for like 50-100 bucks, that could be another option.

The original leappad sucked, but they have some other options now. The V-Tech stuff is pretty decent.

Yeah its pretty annoying Amazon Nazi'ed the Kindle to only use the Amazon AppStore, theres plenty of room for both since each store has things the other doesnt iirc. The cheap tablets now adays are pretty decent, 2 or 3yrs ago they werent buying at all. You still gotta watch out on which you buy because some just come with a default AppLib store with generic shit. Of course like some said, you can root anything and throw google play, but then you gotta manual update most everything.

My dad got himself a Kindle Fire HDX for Christmas and my brother spent the entire day telling him, in nicer terms, how stupid he was for doing it.

Got the kid a nabi 2 for Xmas. She loves it and it has both amazon and google play. Runs off android jelly bean, tegra 2, etc.

I purchased a Leap Pad Ultra for my 4 year old son for Christmas. I will have to look up some torrents if I can download these apps!

LeapPad and its likenesses are designed to make you spend spend spend and then replace it again next year. It's kind of like skylanders in that respect but without it being blatantly obvious from the start.

Both of my kids have the Nexus 7 (2012), it's so cheap, and with a child control app it's easy to control them.

They can't launch anything unless I let them.

Mine are 3 and 6, and both have relatively few issues.

Honestly the hardest part is keeping the things charged. I hope that wireless charging starts to become more prevalent.

I'm curious how yougot them for $50, Tarrant. You're not talking 'Samsung Tab 3 kids' - emphasis on 'kids', as in the yellow colored one bundled with a toddler friendly cover and pen with parental control etc? They run almost $300 here. If you are, throw a link by all means.

Retail yes, they are that much. However I didn't get wifi versions, I got them on Sprint (one of the cell phone carriers over here). Through the end of the year they had them for $50 each and I just threw $5 plans on each of them.

On top of that, I had a $50 gift card for Sprint so I got em both for $50.

I should also note Sprint now has them for free when you sign up or migrate over to their new "Framily" plans.

The only caveat to Sprint giving them away for $50, is you have to get the minimum data plan for them as well, which is $5 a month for 2 years(so another $120 apiece)
