It's up for presale at GMG for $21.89 under the VIP deals tab.
That's... tempting...

I just don't want to be burned again like I was when I bought Simcity (2013) and realized they raped my childhood. Cities XXL has a really bad metacritic rating at 49.

I've never used GMG before, will this activate on Steam?

I'm not into doing any type of pre-orders for games, but the streams looked pretty solid and if it saves 33% off regular price...

Yep, all versions will activate through Steam.

Cities XL was disappointing, especially since it was the sequel to one of my favourite city builders, City Life. That gave actually tried to do new and interesting things with different goals to aim for and specific requirements to unlock various types of people. Cities XL's problem was they tried to do the online multiplayer things too early and it was just a mess, which subsequent companies have tried to patch up into single player games.

i bought it. 22$ for something that already looks better then Simcity is just so minor a cost.

It pretty much looks like a direct update to SimCity 2000 to me, which is the only Sim game I've bought or played in the past 10 years (actually just picked it up last year for like $1). Looks like what I want although I'm on the fence about actually grabbing it considering how much other stuff is coming out that I want to play, too.

For the price I cant really pass it up. Been watching more streams and it seems a lot better then sim city. There's still some unknowns and how things interact etc. It's also missing some of the depth sim city had in areas(specializing your city etc). Traffic looked to be a pain, but today the guy was saying it seemed a lot better. He also worked a bit at roads, connections, merges and public transport to help alleviate.

I think one interesting thing to mess with will be policies and region policies.

The one thing I read that was pretty cool is you can restrict freight in some area's that you designate so something like freight trucks can't try go through an area. I think the traffic in this game is really good and it's just a matter of finding the right combinations of roads in certain area's. In SimCity 2013 it didn't really matter because traffic became fubar no matter what you did. The flexibility of road building in this game is pretty awesome. You can build ramps off bridges and it looks pretty cool!

I haven't played any modern SimCity but in the LP I was watching of Skylines (by Quill18 I think?) he was specializing different areas. Like Ore Specialization in one of his industrial areas that was on top of ore deposits, agricultural focus on a fertile area, etc. Is that what you mean?

Kind of . But atm in this game, those "resources" dry up in literally a couple hours. So you plant on say a oil area, and in just a couple hours its gone. Here it seems like oil, mining, farming, logging is just something you do initially and then drop it.

Whereas in Sim City , you could specialize your whole city towards oil, mining, computer chip mfcm tourism(gambling, tourist sites) etc and it lasted a long time for the former and things like specific mfc/gambling lasted whole game as you built/grew into it.

This games resources seems to be traffic management. Not complaining though because the tools for managing traffic seem to be thorough.

Ironically the only interesting part to Simcity5 at release was trying to figure out how to avoid all the bugs in the traffic system, haha.

Yeah, its quite the management. I like the variety of roads, making subway/bus/train routes right, using one ways efficiently, blocking commercial shipping traffic from certain areas, etc.

On other fronts you seem to peak kinda early. Saw the guy get fusion plant and hadrion collider special buildings. First pretty much took care of his power needs forever(he was using 1600 Mw at the time, with lots of solar farms/turbines) and the fusion plant gave him 16000 Mw. The hadrion collider gave him 1 million capacity for every tier of education(though it was unknown if you still had to plant schools for "happiness" coverage).

The only thing he didn't unlock(at only 200kish ppl) was the medical center, because it required a Court House, which required your crime rate to hit 50%. So hopefully they update or add things at a decent rate.

Did see him lose a ton of people one time due to his cemeteries filling up and his city having dead people everywhere with no where to take them. He just started putting crematories all over to just burn(no cemeteries anymore). Same with Landfills, once he got incinerator, no need for landfills(and the micro of emptying them when needed).

One other funny part, watched him demolish a dam. It was hilarious watching the water physics catch up. It was flooding a bridge he had, and the land on the side of the rivers. Would of been interesting to see if it cause problems if there was any kind of town on the coast.

Roads, I've seen streamers spend a lot of time creating custom intersections and streamlining traffic flow. Pretty cool and much better than anything I remember CitiesXL offering.

This one ended up not working all that well but you get the idea.

I bought this after watching a shit ton of streams and vids. Looks good, seems playable and the dev team seem committed. As has been mentioned I expect bugfixes the first few weeks but I think this should be pretty good.

Any ideas how many hours this has in it before it gets easy? Sim games I tend to play the hell out of trying to figure it all out then get kinda meh about playing more.

Thats an interesting point. Are there more than just a few ways to make loads of cash rather than just building the same pattern over and over? I saw where you could get very specific with industry, but Im curious how deep that is?

Game available at 1 p.m. CST tomorrow, no pre-load for early purchase.

Release FAQ | All release questions go here

When will it go live on March 10th?
Expect release late afternoon/evening European time, around or after 19:00 CET. This is unfortunately out of our hands and relies on Steam.

Can you pre-load the game on Steam?
Nope, but the download is only (roughly) 3gb!

I have bought the game via not-steam when will I get my key?
You have to contact your retailer for details.

I have bought the game via your webshop (Paradoxplaza.com) when will I get my key?
We'll start to send out keys this evening and keep going through the day tomorrow.

What if I have a physical copy?
Same deal, the game won't activate until launch.

I need help!
If you're experiencing technical issues, please first refer to our tech support forum to see if someone reported something similar.
If you're having an issue with your purchase (such as not reciveing keys) please contact your retailers support.

Yes, some time after launch we are going to add tunnels to the game.

What are the known issues and bugs? (Living list, will update as we progress)

16:9, 16:10, 21:9 and 4:3 ratios are supported. This can result in black borders when playing with a TV. To use a custom resolution, launch the game from the command line. Some UI clipping can occur if the game is played with a non-supported resolution.
Trophy icon on saved games means they have achievements enabled. Saves that use or have used mods do not have achievements enabled.
Space Elevator is highlighted in the Public Transport Info View, but it's missing a line in the legend to tell of how many people use it.
Splash screens cannot be skipped with a mouse click.
On Windows the default fullscreen mode is borderless window which means that some third-party features such as G-Sync don't activate. You can start the game in exclusive fullscreen mode if you force it to use DirectX9 instead of DirectX11 by adding -force-d3d9 as a launch parameter. However, there seems to be problems with 4K resolution when using DirectX9.
All texts do not update "on the fly" when language is changed from the options. The game requires restart to update the texts.
Ships can cross dams and go through low bridges.
Planes can fly through tall buildings.
VERY steep cliffs in the map editor can make textures break open.
On OSX, some hardware have trouble with the Steam overlay in game. If the textures disappear when the overlay shows up, just disable the Steam overlay from the game properties in the Steam client until we work out a patch.
Asset Editor: some assets such as public transport can be imported and customized, however, they will currently not be functional if placed in the game.
Asset Editor: It is not possible to assign thumbnails for intersections and parks at the moment.
There is no easy way to Update an existing item you have previously uploaded on the Steam Workshop at the time being.

Cheers,
The CSL Team

I purchased. Hopefully we don't get burned by a city sim game again.

Are you going to go hard on this one Intropy?
