Gotta go with inept. And the short time I played (launch until luclin released) they gave out 3-4 free respecs, every time they made any major class change they'd give a free respec out.

Unless that changed in the past few months, then I'm going to go with y'all are just crybaby shills for the corpse of verant, dark paw or whatever it's called now, bigmad that you suck at your jobs and got decimated by a couple of hobbyists.

Also thj is the first and only emu I ever played, never would of played eq1 again or have any desire to play any other emulator.

“Multiple forum discussion pages”

Sir, they also spent many more discussion pages back a few years discussing the wood, style, bevels and door knob placement of a door in a nudie picture… surely this elite game forum drives the market

These comments are great :p I agree dpg is just lazy, but lazy and bad at being creative or not, cant make profit/ sell your own currency to buy in game items that are all a result of code you do not own. All those illusions you buy with real world $ are not made with their own art assets or animation assets.

Blaming them for fanbbreaker is hilarious. The masses told them whey they announced it being stuck in luclin and pop for that long would not be fun. But noo it was some EMU server that made it fail. The making money and advertising with the everquest name and IP, they can probably easily prove. Blaming THJ for fangbreaker though, that is just throwing darts at the board and hoping one sticks.

I myself have 3 paid accounts on live servers that I play daily with rl and in game friends but I have also had a lot of fun on the thj server and would really hate to see it shut down

Just re-launch it without all the $ aspects or host it on a server in some country that would just ignore orders from US courts

There's zero chance they could host a server of this magnitude without some sort of compensation. Their server costs have to be pretty fucking expensive with 20k+ users.

They'd either have to go foreign or work out something with DBG.

they have nuked several builds in the last 2 months without offering free respecs. Rangers got nerfed/Enchanter doppels got nuked etc. And usually a specific trio (clr/brd/enc looking at you) isn't as easy as just swapping one class for another and being as strong. That also doesn't include gear changes happening, which if you have top tier gear you were buying unattuners and stuff like that.

I don't think Live is some amazing thing either, they are bums who do the bare minimum to keep the game (barely) going but that doesn't mean that these guys get a free pass riding on someone else's IP to make money.

Their donation page was public at one point and they made over 10k in 8 hours after PoP launch and by our guesses from downloading the feed they were pulling in over 100k a month near pop launch

These devs are so disconnected from the game’s fundamentals that it’s no surprise they thought this would fly. Explaining basics like “you can’t proc on frenzy/backstab” is mind-numbing.

It’s obvious they had a cash-grab idea — slap a multiclass power fantasy onto a hardcore legacy IP and milk it.

The worst part? The way they whip class balance around just to drive more purchases. When rerolling a character costs $10 - $50 in EOM “donations,” it stops looking like design and starts looking like manipulation.
bro this is a retarded ass take... "slap a multiclass power fantasy"... wtf "slap"... this is years worth of work that started way before THJ.

So you are saying that, in the last few months, they have gotten greedy?

they were like, 3-4k players when I quit playing. figured it would ramp up with PoP....but 20k players? that's more than all the other EQ emus+ eq live so yeah, that will bring attention to yourself. To then also start making pendulum shifting changes without offering respecs is kinda sus.

I think they were probably making a decent living, enough to pay the 2 guys salaries for sure, and then as it became more popular you had more cries for "buffs/nerfs/etc" from the larger audience of retarded FOTM chasers and maybe they used that to justify not giving out a respec? then they saw how much money that made them so they kept doing it?

I mean seriously, class balance on a solo server that heavily, heavily rewards making alts? is fucking retarded. they should of told everyone to go fuck themselves and never changed shit, and never even put in respecs as an option.

If they had left everything alone and the donations were just for bags and cosmetic items I don't think they would of got sued no matter how much money they were making from it. i'm guessing one of those nerfs hit one of the retards working for DBG so they decided to sue.

There was only 1 "must have" convenience item which was the port to instance option that cost 5 EOM and you only had to buy it on 1 character to unlock the ability on your account. but you typically made between 1-7 EOM from random drops just leveling to cap so it was, in a sense, free.

They figured out a way to monetize the worst EQ players, the bandwagon flavor of the month types, good on them. I hope they win the lawsuit but they have like no legal leg to stand on.

IP laws are retarded and shouldn't be supported. Daybreak are as far removed from the development of the content THJ is using as the THJ devs are. Classic through PoP should be in the public domain at this point. Nobody at DBG had anything to do with the content being created and they just sit on top of the IP milking it with shitty TLP ideas that everyone knows are going to fail.

I'm just curious what is going on in the hosting portion. My brain tells me that EQ (and google backs me up, though who the fuck knows with Gemini really) was largely run on what were effectively mid-high end PCs at the time. Like they didn't actually migrate to enterprise grade hardware until like Velious or later. That shit? Would have been like 4core 8Gig rigs on average at the time. You can run facsimiles of those in AWS for like... 100 a month. Maybe 500 a month with the expanded playerbase? (I haven't done a ton of research; it's Vanilla > PoP from what I dug up) and with 20k active players... that's what, 0.025 a month per player? The legal fees to even start this process on Daybreak's side has got to be in the thousands. This either means the costs to run a server are much much higher than I think (would love that explanation) or Daybreak's lawyer team have no idea what they are doing.

You can have that opinion, but the obviousness of their balancing decisions doing things like

1. nuking the most popular class (bard)
2. buffing the shit out of rangers
3. nerfing the shit out of rangers
4. buffing melee to levels the previous 2 builds never even reached

points to them cashing in on their little idea

all during pop

We can mock daybreak and all but there just doesn't seem to be a universe where this lawsuit itself is wrong. Even when lines of it are comical. There ARE going to be people who skip the usual tlp cycling because a better emu is out, even if 99% of the problem with fangbreaker was its own ruleset. The emu is stealing ip and profiting off it.

Most importantly though, NOT taking action is an action. If daybreak ignored this, they would be weakened in their ability to litigate in the futute because of it. Thjs big defense is very likely to be this logic - they allowed so many other emus and even compromised with hackers.

The emulators delved to greedily and too deep.

20k people on THJ is probably more than Daybreak has in subs.

When things like this happen, I'll never understand why the companies in question don't just "absorb" the offending developers/game instead of shutting them down.

So many great projects have been C&D'd over the years by game companies that could have instead profited off of giving them an official stamp and taking a cut of the profits.

THJ could become an unofficial EQ server(s?) with DP getting some of the profits, and some of the things it does that have people excited could then be used for future official servers.

They(dbg) dont care about the cost of lawsuit(also as a corporation, they have lawyers on staff just for this). Its about setting a precedent.

Because even if they get it shut down(most likely) its not as if all those players are going to suddenly go play on their TLPs. The current situation doesn't change.

THJ was making more money from donors than DBG/DPG could afford to pay them. Remember EQ hires for basically poverty pay given the cost of living out there.

I think it’s reasonable for them to go after THJ given the monetization. The scum part was trying to keep it sealed and also listing an additional 20 people who contributed or even just promoted the server on YouTube.

Saw they were advertising engineering positions, so figured I'd at least look since I lost my job. $40-60k range for software engineers in fucking San Diego, lol. Get the fuck out of here.

I assume the promoter part is because they kept using the everquest name? Only thing I can think of.

It was in the EQ category on twitch and the people streaming THJ had far more viewers then any EQ streamer.

They had to know this was coming and have some type of plan.

The server is off line for now?
