I just finished Alien Isolation last night (going through a back log) and while it was an awesome game and captured the entire alien retro universe, about 2-3 hours from the ending I was just thinking, "Ok end this already for Christ's sake... I want to open a door and have it work. Not open a door, have the power go out, backtrack through an Alien, and then hit a power generator, and go back again to the same fucking door". At any rate, I still loved the game... right up until the point of...

I finally get to the damn Torrenz and low and behold.... ANOTHER ALIEN MADE IT'S WAY ON BOARD AND.... OH HEY I AM GOING TO BLOW IT OUT OF THE AIRLOCK AND I AM GOING WITH IT.... AND THEN A CUT SCENE.... AM I GETTING PICKED UP??? WHO THE FUCK KNOWS BECAUSE ALL I SAW WAS A LIGHT ON RIPLEY'S SPACESUIT LIKE SHE WAS GOING TO BE AND.... CREDITS ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

Now this would be fucking FINE if I knew that they were going to continue the story and wrap up some things in the next one. But for Christ's sake CA and Sega, when you don't even know if the game will be profitable enough to make a sequel, MAYBE YOU SHOULD WRAP IT UP PROPERLY FOR THE 20 HOURS OF SLUGGING A PLAYER JUST WENT THROUGH JUST IN CASE YOU WON'T MAKE ANOTHER ONE!

Holy shit this happens way too much in games today. Enough of the Bullshit Cliffhanger endings, enough of not wrapping up very awesome stories. Finish the ending to completion EVERY SINGLE TIME. Because guess what? Your writer is going to quit. Your team is going to move onto project C. Whatever you had in mind for continuation, EVEN IF YOU GET GREEN LIT, WILL MOST LIKELY NOT BE YOU FUCKING MAKING THE GAME OR WRITING THE SHIT-COCKING STORY.

CREATE PROPER ENDINGS FOR YOUR GAMES.

If Uncharted 4 ends in some ridiculous way, I am going to Office Space my PS4 in the backyard.

You'll be happy to hear that there's no plans for an Alien: Isolation sequel due to low sales.

Edit: Ding 2500.

Exactly. Yet, the game was left on one of the shortest most bullshit cliffhangers known to man kind. What is literally, a 10 second, at most, cutscene before the credit roll.

There are a lot of developers here. There are a lot of writers here. There are a lot of pseudo-marketing specialists here.

CREATE A PROPER ENDING.

After ten minutes of unskippable credits I alt-F4'd and looked up the post-credit scenes of whatever ass creed game on youtube.

Yeah that's another one. Post Credit Scenes. No one cares to look at 60,000,000 credit names listed. Putting people through that for a post-credit cut scene is the worst.

I heard Alien Isolation should have been a great 8-10 hour game that they stretched out to 18-20 hours, repeating the same mundane bullshit over and over. Skipped it.

Shitty endings seem like the product of getting games finished and rushed out the door. What other explanation is there? It seems really common these days.

If you are a fan of the Alien IP, you should really grab it and play through it. It is more akin to the original Alien than anything else. There is the problem is the game length though. So many times you are just shaking your head (Towards hour 15 or so) where you just want to get to the end of the game. There are really good set pieces though within. The game is intense when you want to save at a check point and there is a delay - you hop eyou get the save off before the alien kicks your keester. The problem more or less rears towards the end when you know the game should have been over already and it is blatantly obvious, for whatever reason, they wanted to add more playtime. The "Oh thank God I am here..." Amanda Ripley: "OH NO THE POWER GENERATOR SHORTED OUT" go back to area with the power generator, turn it on, go back to the same damn place you were just at to move forward...

That happened towards the end. And the ultimate is when you think the game is over as you get into a space suit, oh hey, an Alien, and you fall back to the middle of the ship again. I started laughing at that point saying, "Really???????"

the only game ending that pissed me off was mass effect 3, i honestly can't think of any others that left me angry (haven't played isolation). most are forgettable like GTA or Watch Dogs or Division, some feel like you are saying goodbye to friends like The Last of Us or Assassins Creed 4

Ending of Dead Space 2 was such a fucking let down. They were SO CLOSE to making something amazing, telling the story they had to tell, and being done with it. But nooooooooooooooope gotta make more shitty multiplayer sequels with in-game cash stores!

Edit: can't embed timestamps I guess, first half of the video is just the stupid boss fight

Or on the "ending" of 90% of games made from 1979-1990. There was none. Console games you got two fucking lives. You might carry a princess at the end or she might be in another fucking castle. STORY OVER.

Fuck you. Play Again?

And if you want to talk PC Games, same fucking thing. If you were really fucking lucky you got a wall of text. Otherwise you killed the boss and the next thing you saw was a blinking fucking cursor in DOS. Fuck you Sentinel Worlds.

We have clearly become the Affluenza generation of gaming. #2livesmatter

The difference is, they were games where the story didn't matter. Nobody's upset that the ending of Madden 2010 didn't give them the closure they needed.

I don't think this thread can go any direction other than a Mass Effect bitch fest. I mean god damnit that still pisses me off years later

If this a crappy video game ending thread, throw in Dragons Age Inquisition. That ending sucked especially since we don't know if they're going to make another one.

The reason for this is because games are mostly developed in a time linear fashion. You make stage 1 before 2, you work on the starting areas of the game before the end ones.

So when a budget or time crunch happens, the only place to cut is in the end of the game. Because of this you often see rushed endings, or endings that make little sense because 8h of content that explains them has been cut and they're no longer completely coherent in the new context.

Publishers and Producers are almost 100% at fault for this. Most game developers aren't going in with the intention to not give a shit about the ending.
You also want your game to make a strong first impression. A game that is pretty much dogshit the first handful of levels and then picks up will probably not be seen as being too successful.

I think Bravely Default is the poster child for a "Good game that ended horribly." Like he said I'm sure the devs didn't intend on you replaying the entire game again as an ending but time constraints required it.

It was absolutely intended... it's the whole point of the game.

The theme of the game is "breaking the cycle." That's why the boss is called Ouroboros, which is the Greek serpent eating its tail which represents infinity.

Did Bravely Default make it to mainstream financial news? Because I remember the ME3 meltdown making it into Money? alomgside market analysis of the gaming industry as a whole. Unless you're trying to say ME3 gameplay wasn't 'good' I think ME3 remains the poster for bad game endings regardless of anything else for the majority of the gaming and non-gaming communities.
