I didn't like the h100. Since theres no passive cooling via a heatsink, the fans and pump will be running 24/7 . I got similar temps with a noctua u12 heatsink with 2 f12 fans on it and all the fans in my case turn off when the computer goes into sleep mode.

Like money is no object top of the line? Or really good but not the very top of the line? The price difference in the 2 can be dramatic.

You can easily splurge a few thousands on cooling alone.

edit : laedrun, really ?
Personal preference. I have no interest in fucking with hoses leaks and bacterial build up in water cooling systems. Too much upkeep for me, gogo d14, plug it in and forget it.

I dunno, I was researching some supermicro mb for work so when your "unlimited money" post came I had to throw that monster in there.

For some reason the pc part picker wouldn't let me add a silverstone ft02 to the parts i picked out, annoying. ft02 in silver is definitely my favorite full tower case.

Even if I had the money I would not waste it on that shit that will be obsolete in 6 mos. So much more to spend money on than that. Especially since youre chasing the law of diminishing returns.

So how about complete gaming systems (sans monitor) for around 1-1.5k? Xbro is pestering me about this fucking Alienware X51 thing, and I took one look atthis nightmareand said oh jesus christ no.

Note that this is a guy who has both consoles, at least two $500 tablets, a $700 phone every year (he has to pay full price to keep his plan), and whose last desktop was a $6000 Alienware back when Clinton was President. But he rants about " you need a $7000 pc to play games" and "nobody wants giant ugly desktops anymore" and "PCs are totally dead, nobody will have one ever again" blah blah and so on. I'd tell him to just buy that fucking Alienware thing but I owe the guy and I'd be the one fixing it when it overheats in every game.

I don't want him to buy a piece of shit because that defeats the point when he already owns both goddamn consoles. So I'd say at least a Nvidia 770.

Excuse the rant. The guy knows how to annoy me.

1-1.5K USD?

i5 4670K + mobo of your choice($350-$400)
16GB Ram($150)
Nvidia 770($350)
256GB SSD(I like Samsung Evo) ($170)
Mid-tower or Full-tower case, depending on your preference($50-$100)
650W(or so) Bronze or higher rated PSU($80)
Windows 8.1($90)

That should put you in the $1000-$1500 range depending on what kind of deals are running right now, and will also play any game out right now on ultra settings at 1080p/1200p.

I mean a ready made system. He knows shit about computers and I'm not building it for him and being tech support for it for the next 20 years.

Sorry, I should've quantified more. Not crazy billionaire diamond-studded case rich. Like $3-4k. Not water cooling madness. (mid-)top of the line in a mid-tower case. No insanity stuff. That kinda idea.

I haven't kept up with the latest & greatest in a long time. Dual GPUs and full SSD was my guess, but what models are the best currently I'm quite clueless.

I assumed he meant for gaming. Whats the purpose of this build?
Yes, gaming.

This might work - thanks. Might drop it down to 3.5k range, but this is good start.

Here is pretty much what I listed out, pre-built

CybertronPC Minotaur Gaming PC - 4th Gen. Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz, 16GB DDR3, 2TB HDD, 120GB SSD, Blu-ray/DVDRW, 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770, Windows 8 64-bit, Keyboard & Mouse, - TGM1113A at TigerDirect.com

2 grand basically. About $600-$700 more than building yourself, unfortunately. The problem with prebuilt systems in the $1000-$1500 range is that they all have shit graphic cards, and usually no SSD. So you have to end up getting an SSD and then manually reinstalling windows anyways, and also getting a new video card that doesn't suck.

Something like this would be within that budget:
CybertronPC Kombat K Gaming PC - 4th Gen. Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz, 16GB DDR3, 2TB HDD, Blu-ray, 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7850, Windows 8 64-bit, Keyboard & Mouse, - TGM2123A at TigerDirect.com

But the video card is just ok, it's decent right now, but is going to really suck in under a year and need to be replaced to play new games on high/ultra settings. If I recommended that system to a friend, I would do it with making them well aware that they will probably have to plunk down another $300-$400 on a video card in under 12 months.
