I'm giving thought to running JDEC speeds for 1.2v on my RAM. Basically every CPU is X3D, so the speed drop won't matter at all, and the reduced voltage will hopefully prevent an early failure. Companies aren't replacing RAM under warranty - they are refunding the original buy price and that won't come close to covering replacement sticks.

I am having a philisophical quandry....

Over time here at Chez Haus (for over 20 years in fact) the "circle of life" was that when a machine was retired from being a gaming rig, it settled into retirement in my workshop/lab as a lab box for various things I did, usually replicating things for my work.

Now, with the advent of cloud computing, and the ability to roll out compact VMs and Docker in general the need for multiple machines is pretty much gone. I have one moderately beefy lab box (i7 and 32G of ram, 2tb SSD) and it handles everything I have a need for.

So I am looking at what is currently a pool of three perfectly functional , but very old, machines. (Talking i3 and 8-16g of ddr2 for example) and whereas I know "Oh I can slap an efficient OS on that and milk some more use out of it" I don't really have a need to, and it would essentially be getting the same work done using more electricity from running multiple systems. So I figured it's time to ditch the old but workable machines. But the cases are still great, good cases, many of which I have built in extra fans for optimal airflow. Hate the idea of throwing those out, but what do we do with such things these days?
Target practice is the only real answer here.

Seriously thinking about ordering another 2x16 GB kit of my DDR4 just in case. A measly $240, three times what I originally paid in 2020.

Fuck this timeline.

People were calling me retarded for dumping 7k on my computer last year. Now I'm sitting on like 12k of resell value. First time in my life a computer has gone up in value.

The Laptop was sold by a 3rd party vendor PC Heaven through Best Buy's website, laptops can still benefit from dual channel but the hardware limitations state max allocation of 32GB. Unknown if dual channel was even being used at all with the 2x32 (maybe treated as 1x32) but it's possible 2x16 could have been an actual performance increase and obviously cost less.

The repair was because the laptop stopped working, probably because it had an invalid configuration of RAM and eventually Windows/BIOS stopped accepting it. Best Buy tech got it working at max 32GB spec and still shipped back the extra RAM. I'd be mad at Lenovo for a capped system and then the 3rd party seller for a pseudo-fraudalent listing to fleece for more RAM money.

Yeah. These low power Intel CPU's often have a 32GB cap.

Where are you getting this info? They're still selling this and that processor supports up to 192GB of RAM

The board is going to limit capability and timings regardless of what the processor allows. Lenovo doesn't offer this model with more than 32GB so it has to be an aftermarket seller. Legion 7i or Pro versions can likely do higher and remain stable but this is a 5i with a two-slot board and the RAM timings are limited to 4800 or 5600.
1 Year warranty from PC Heaven – Warranty is managed directly through the seller instead of the manufacturer.
From the post it was 8 months old and started blue screening, repair went through Best Buy per the seller which is probably why he received the extra stick back. If it was manufacturer Lenovo would have kept or done god knows what.
