I know the mechanical hard drive business has consolidated a lot in recent years, but are those the only 3 companies manufacturing them anymore? I hadn't really kept up on mechanical HDs lately, all of my attention has been on SSDs

Do you guys think there will be big price cuts on the 700 series once Nvidia releases their 800 series?
Well, there will be price cuts but I don't know that they will qualify as "big".

For example, on the last generation of releases, 660Tis were retailing around $300. When the $300 760s released, the 660Tis dropped to like $250-$275.

So yeah, prices will probably drop some, but don't expect the older cards to be price cut in half or anything extreme. So maybe expect 10% drops as a conservative estimate, and maybe 20% tops if you're lucky(at least initially, the older cards will slowly decline in price over time too, and then expect some blowout sales to remove inventory around the next holiday season)

That's fairly unlikely. They'll probably discontinue it by then, and instead have an 850 or something in that price point.

Probably. Hopefully they will flood ebay when people start upgrading or i can grab one off of someone here for a reasonable price.

Picked up a recent deal for a Samsung EVO 256gb SSD, and I'm starting to regret it. Prior to this, my main drive was a WD Caviar Black 1TB, with an external 2TB Samsung drive for basically all my media.

I never had space issues with the 1TB of space, but I'm juggling games like crazy now that I have just 256gb.

And honestly, I know that people say that an SSD is the single best upgrade you can make for a computer, and I agree. The facts are the facts, but I was never annoyed at slow load times from my normal mechanical hard drive, at 7200rpm, and so I get less space, and what seems to me, most of the time, the same speeds. Doh.

You don't put your games on the SSD. Put your os on it and your games/steam on your platter drive. If you have one or two games you play over and over those can be installed on the SSD.

Good point. I'll start the process of relocating most of my Steam games.

I didn't realize that having the OS on the SSD was the main point, and the rest really didn't have to be.

How many games do you need installed simultaneously? You should be able to install your OS and the 5 or 6 average games you might currently play and still only be at 50% capacity. But yeah, don't put your entire Steam library on the SSD.

Games don't tend to load much faster off an SSD. Anandtech or some other website did a bunch of testing and found that load times decreased by single digit percentages. Mostly what people talk about with an SSD is how fast your OS boots up, and how quickly programs load, especially when multi-tasking. And really, it's not the transition from platter disk to SSD that you notice so much. It's when you go back to a PC with a platter drive that you think "why the fuck is this piece of shit so slow?"

Just use Steam mover to move the games you actually are playing to SSD and when you're done move them back?

I need a few recommendations on what to look for. I finally bit the bullet and got i5 4670k and a z87 mobo to go along with it. I just need some advice on what kind of power supply to get and what to look for in a monitor. I won't be doing any SLI that is for sure but I will be gaming. What wattage should I be aiming for? Would 500W be sufficient?

For the monitor I am going looking for something around 20+" and 1080p. What should I be looking for in regards to response time?
