Much better than I was expecting, and definitely gave some solid original Dexter vibes.

It's definitely watchable, lots of cameos. I quit Dexter at season5? Gave the other 2 spin offs a chance but never made it past 2 episodes.

The super detective I think is the worst part. Definitely feels more like earlier dexter.

I don't even know wtf happened with Deborah lol. His son kills Batista? Too early guess

Can tell the writers really tuned up the script to make sure Michael C. Hall had his one-liners.

And Hall is absolutely killing it on the delivery of the lines they wrote.

The dialogue they had him saying in the last season was so poor he couldn't even stay in character. Night and day difference. This is Dexter.

Haven't watched since the 5th season debacle. 4th season was the peak. Not getting drug into this until the whole season is over.

uh what 5th season debacle?

trinity was a hard season to follow but 5th was pretty good actually. Even the 6th season was decent. Basically when Deb finds out he's the BHB in the final scene of season 6 is when it goes to shit, so season 7 was a trainwreck then the only way to write their way out of that was to kill everyone off and end the show in season 8.

the 10 years later season 9 new blood was atrocious and the prequel season that released last year retcon'd virtually every aspect of the original series and was terrible.

the first 2 episodes of this season are "cautiously optimistic" but I wouldn't put it past them to fuck it up too

Ok so this fell off my radar but I guess there are a few more episodes to catch up on.

episode 3 just handwaves away a shitty retcon from Dexter New Blood. New Blood was the shitty 10 years later season with him in rural upstate new york, and had retcon'd his drug injection to Ketamine instead of Etorphine (M99) which it had always been in the original show, this was done because the writers were retards, and it was needed for the plot of the entire fucking season, ie it was fucking stupid.

It was like the original ending to 28 days later when they were going to do a full body blood transfusion to cure the dad and kill the protagonist, then someone on the set was like "hey you guys are retarded it doesn't work like that" and they were like, "oh shit you're right, we gotta redo the entire ending!"

So Dexter New Blood didn't have anyone competent working on it to point out the original drug was M99 so the whole storyline around ketamine was stupid and wasn't going to work so they just rolled with it and retconned 8 fucking seasons of a show away cus they were retarded faggots.

And now he's back to using Etorphine because that's what he always used and we're just going to pretend that New Blood didn't happen

alright so through episode 4.

So far can't tell if this is truly a return to form for this show after the disastrous last 2 reboot seasons (new blood and the prequel) which were both garbage, or if this is just a glimmer of past glories and it will quickly turn to shit.

This is clearly OG writing team or at least people who have seen and respect the OG material. Can't tell exactly, it rides the line of fan service and great story telling. Many many call backs and returning characters, but only where they would make sense for the story. Truly all star cast of TV greats...from yesteryear/golden age of TV (early 00's) almost like a homage to aging TV actors giving it one last go?

Besides dexter, his dad and many of the old miami squad (batista, quinn, masuka) as well as the ghosts of many previous killers (trinity, jimmy smits from season 3, etc) this season so far we have:
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones)
Neil Patrick Harris (Dougie, HIMYM)
Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad, Jessica Jones)
Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
And Uma Thurman (more movie than TV but this could be her swansong as well)

And despite having to follow the worst season of television for any show, I think they are navigating well, correcting issues from new blood, dealing with the unavoidables as far as story is concerned (literally his son shot him in the heart to end new blood, so writing your way out of that took some real finesse).

I think this is what happened:

The residual money started to run out or the show runner or michael c hall, or maybe both, had a drug/gambling problem and needed to reboot the series.

They put together some ultra retarded feminist slop season so "dexter can get his comeuppance" or whatever, and committed to shooting that...hardly anyone from the original show was on board though so they went with what they had.

As they wrap up filming, with covid and all that, they are sitting there watching netflix and they catch Sandman season 1, the episode about the serial killer convention...And they both turn to each other and say "holy fuck why didn't we think of that?"

So they quickly put together some shit prequel season to buy time while they think of way to undo the cashgrab slop new blood season with a real and proper new final(?) season.

So far first 4 episodes have been great. The worst part of the show is detective autismo investigating harrison's kill, reminds me of the lady detective from last season of reacher with the bad accent? i don't know why, just can't stand her

Finally a good episode, it's so much better when they don't bring it to a crashing halt with his landlord's family scenes.

yeah i understood the setup, needed to establish him a residence, needed to get a job, needed some acupuncture (lol) to help with his recovery. I could of sworn all that setup was going to lead to the dark passenger would eventually kill his landlord or attempt to kill him and dexter would intervene or at least get revenge or some shit....which would payoff all the scenes building him up.

Now it just doesn't make sense. either he never shows up again in which case, why bother with all that setup, much easier ways to establish dexter in NYC, or he does show up later in some libtard way to make some political statement about the plight of immigrants. maybe he and his whole family are illegal and they get deported by ICE later?

This whole season is just waiting for the other shoe to drop, they've produced nothing but slop for the last at least 4 seasons of this show I can't believe they are going to make it to the end without fucking this one up to

I predict it comes back up later when the serial killer group finds out where he lives and (because they think he's the dark passenger) pressures him into killing the family, and he has to figure out how to navigate that conflict.

ah yeah that would also make sense, but easy enough to circumvent

I can definitely see them fucking with the family. Everything he's around does. I have now idea or remember anything about the she anymore so when Batista talks about Dexter murdering Laguerta is a blank

I was gonna say yeah season 8 was terrible i also forgot, but that was actually season 7, which was also terrible. I had to wikipedia to remind myself of what happened.

La Guerta never believed Doakes was the BHB, and in season 7 she finds a blood slide left at the kill site of the season 6 villain, so she realizes the BHB is still alive and starts to suspect dexter. At the same time, Debra witnessed him kill the season 6 guy and eventually confronts him and he admits he is the BHB.

All of season seven is just killing off of random characters in order to keep the story going and not out dexter and it ends with debra killing la guerta to defend Dexter, then her being catatonic depressed about it in season 8, ends with killing off of Debra and then Dexter fakes his own death to escape the shitty plot holes they've made to keep his identify a secret.

I kind of remember Laguerta spying on Dex, but I quit the show that season I feel like. Definitely don't remember her getting married

Out of pure boredom, we watched the first few episodes of this, and then last night hit a paywall because we only have the basic paramount+ (I didn't even know there was another tier).
Did they change this after the first three episodes? So far it's been OK, but I'm not too thrilled to add even more to monthly subscriptions that I never remember to cancel
