It all depends on how they account for the transactions. If the sale is instant but sits in an escrow account for a period to minimise fraudulent charges then it all depends on how they have the verbiage for the account setup. It wouldn't be possible to rollback sales I think, if real dollars have actually changed hands and aren't just sitting in a pool somewhere waiting to be sent out then I think they are out of luck, but if the dollars from the sales haven't been sent yet then I don't see any reason that they can't be "rolled back," it isn't actually a rollback though, more like just cancelling the transactions that took place for a few hours today.
I don't know what it would cost Blizzard, probably something due to people working overtime and so on, but I don't think that anyone would lose money on a rollback unless they were actively abusing the bug. Also from what I can see the bug didn't involve real money sales at all, it involved cancelling gold auctions on the RMAH and receiving duplicated gold in return. So it's not like there were a ton of real money transactions going on compared to normal, most of the transactions were taking place on the GAH since the RMAH was just used to duplicate the gold, there were no sales involved with the duplication method.
You said it all right there. I hope for the best since I enjoyed playing the game for a time and look forward to playing the expansion when it's released, and I also know that there are still lots of active Diablo III players who I feel bad for, I will feel especially bad for them if Blizzard doesn't roll this mess of a patch back.If it costs them more money to roll back than simply ban everyone and give a hard ass stink eye to everyone else, guess what they will do.
this could turn it around for diablo 3, if they roll back! You said it all right there. Coming a bit late to this, but no, gold transactions are not instant. I just sold 50 Mil a week ago for the stunning price of $12.50 and it suffers from the same delay as an item. They could indeed negate all the sales. If I were Blizzard I would just Ban accounst that took advantage of this for starters, but I imagine rollbacks are coming. It's just an assumption but I think currency transactions are as close to instantaneous as they can get it so that money is already being sent to paypal etc and I don't know how they can reverse all that either legally or in good conscience.
