Good. Steam has been sitting on their thumbs for years because they've never really had any direct competition. The place has mostly devolved in to endless shitpiles of shovelware and anime titty games, with all the major publishers jumping ship to their own launchers because steam still demands a 30% cut.

If Discord can make their universal launcher function properly where it can launch games via Steam/Origin/uPlay/whatever and just act as a storefront they could potentially be in a really nice spot. They already have basically the entire PC userbase under their umbrella, so if people can just buy a game in Discord > activate it at Origin or whatever then just never have to use Origin and launch via Discord I could see this really taking off.

I'm not sure what disadvantage they would have beyoned a slight bit of extra account management unless they were heavily investing in steamworks. Keeping your product on as few platforms as possible would be pretty stupid unless you were actively getting compensated for it (exclusivity)

Don't forget the dozen game overlays that pop up. I mean, how else would you remember the shortcut to take Ansel screenshots?

I have set up a room in Steam's new Friends category. It seems to work pretty well, but I couldn't test it.

I never really liked Discord. But then again, like other people have said, my PC is soon gonna be nothing but launchers and porn.

While I generally love more competition, Discord and Twitch as platforms for purchases makes me VERY apprehensive.

Their stance on (and corporate culture involving) SJW things has gone beyond the "reasonable" (Crazy by even moderate leftists / Libertarian standards) and into places like, "Banning a discord server because of adult themed channels" which happened in the case of FFXIV-Subreddit discord server. From the subreddit admins mouth, they basically had a NSFW channel for all "Adult Themed Art" and discord admins basically said, "Nope, no nudity at all" and gave the discord server admins a sort time frame to nuke the content, they didn't respond because of some reason (I THINK it was late at night) and the discord admin team took that as non-compliance and nuked the server.

It isn't like this is a one time thing either, Discord and Twitch monitor ALL things said on their platforms, some for good reason (threats) and others for "Muh Safe Space!" the issue comes with how they choose to enforce said "SJW" topics on a case by case basis skewed more towards the virtues of California than a general rule-set applied to all equally.

---

Steam may have it's issues but I am much more confident in spending money on their platform since they don't have a track-record of banning anyone but cheaters typically.

Even if i get banned from twotch / discord and retain access to my games, I don't want to support a business model with such a shaky foundation in terms of community ethics policing.

They didn't ban a channel for posting lewds, it got stripped of the title of being the "official" ff14 Discord server. There's a big fucking difference. The entire place still exists, it just isn't officially affiliated with FF14 anymore.

Steam would ban the fuck out of you for trying to make a porn thread on an official game discussion page as well. Stop being a fucking baby about people getting their waifus deleted.

My bad, you are right, they didn't get banned they got their partnership revoked.

The other context seems to be correct though, am I right?

They had their partnership revoked because they had a NSFW section and were told "No NSFW section" and they didn't remove it in a time deemed appropriate?

As far as I am aware it had nothing to do with switching the "Official" hat from one server to another since multiple communities can be partners for a singular game, unless they changed that stance.

---

Either way, the other points still stand that the company does remove servers / people that go against their grain and they do monitor all servers for hate speech and "harassment", a statement they confirmed themselves a while back.

With the nebulous terms of "Hate" and "Harassment" that this company pulls from, I will always be hesitant to toss money their way.

Even if you don't want to use their storefront, Discord getting into the game is good for you as a Steam user. Competition is always good, and anything that gets Valve off their lazy flat managed ass is a good thing.

From what I read when that happened, they revoked the partnership because they got A TON of complaints over time about the moderation and shit like that, and they took that chance to remove it, not because of the NSFW room. It was assumed it was because of the NSFW room and someone posted some Lala hentai shit, but when they made their statement on it they said it was because of the complaints and that it was more or less going to happen anyway.

The rest like monitoring for harassment/hate speech is what every modern platform does to an extent. This isn't a Discord thing, it's a modern media thing, they all do it. There's always room for a "true free speech" platform, but what you're signaling if you make one before they actually start silencing "normal" stuff is that you just want all the actual neo nazis and pedophiles to use your platform, since at this point that's the only shit that's actually getting moderated.

You can get banned from Steam chat if you spam racist shit in there too. They won't ban your entire account though, you just can't use discussion groups or whatever, kinda like how you can get a VAC ban but still play your single player games and shit. Maybe Discord does it differently I don't know, haven't read their ToS to see if it's even explained in it, nor do I care until they get some exclusivity on something good. Considering they're not offering any better deal to big developpers though, it'll be small indies with their programs where they pay for it to be finished. Not sure we'll see too much good stuff out of that though.

The whole "official Discord partner" and whatever label is kind of nebulous and varies a ton from game to game. They do police those so you can't just do whatever you want if you want to be affiliated with whatever game or community.

No one gives a fuck what you do in your private servers though, so it's not like the Discord police are gonna come kick the door down on the FoH server and tell us to stop calling people faggots.

Voice chat was pretty fun, while the board was down and after it came back up some of us hung out and had a good time. I was drinking so I only remember Mcfly, Guardian, Srathor, Vanessa early on, and shit... someone else, fuck I dunno sorry. Anyways we should try and do that more often, just a good old fashioned bull shit session.

I greatly prefer discord over TS3 as a "guild" app because you can sit in the main channel in Discord without voice and you're considered "online", on TS3 you were expected to be in the main voice channel and suffer that one asshole who could NEVER shut his fucking mouth for a minute.

But you could just start insulting him in german and he'd have no idea what you're talking about.

Unless you're doing german guilds i guess.

I’ve tried it out. It’s extremely similar to Discord but with more features.
