I pulled a search and nothing came up, which I thought was unusual but I realize these forums don't go back to 2011 so maybe that's why it's not around anymore.

Anyway, I just beat Final Fantasy Tactics for the xxx time and was trying to expand into more games of the same genre only to be constantly disappointed.

Until I found this game. Everything I wish you could do in Tactics (granted because of the time period a lot of it just couldn't work then) is here. It's a very light hearted game which, while I love and find hilarious, sort of wish it was as dramatic and serious as FFT just because it offers such good gameplay that would mesh so well with it. Being able to connect online and assist/fight other people, etc would be my dream FFT game. Anyway, enough about my personal taste.

I picked this up a week ago and went through all the tutorials the game offers, etc. but there are still some things that aren't too clear. I'm going through wikis and whatnot, but they are either not completely updated or don't have 100% accurate information.

Things I'm looking for - do Healers use RES as main stat for healing and not INT? Thieves / Guns use HIT/SPD? What the hell are the tower evilities? How long is the main campaign? Can I expect to be a couple hundred levels high by the time it's finished?

Any other tips and insight would be greatly appreciated.

So umm, yeah, aside from a few questions I'd like to ask occasionally if you haven't tried the Disgaea series and are a fan of tactical RPGs, get your hands on this one. It's very complex in the best way possible, no level is dull in any sense and I haven't even begun to delve into the massive amount of skill and items combos available. Disclaimer: Very Japanese, sort of an anime vibe to it but it's not overwhelming.

Yes, healers use RES instead of INT for healing.
yes guns use HIT and SPD combined.
main campaign is a good 30 hours, you will not be over level 50 or 60 by the time you finish it unless you grind or spend time in the item world. but the main campaign is not where the game ends.

I'm a big fan of the series, you should play 1-3 if you like 4. They are all pretty much the same.

There are also other Nippon Ichi games you'd probably like: Phantom Brave, Makai Wars, Soul Nomad.

Non NI games you might also like: Fire Emblem, Stella Deus, Record of Agarest War, and so on.

Thank you.

I think it's kind of retarded that I have to start all over from level 1 as a new class to level it all the way up to x (usually high) in order to get to the next one, in which case I'll be starting from one all over again as well. Are you really just supposed to stop playing the main way and grind these characters back up in older levels/item world and get them back to where you were progression wise? I literally just found a forum that answers a lot, I thought I'd post for the discussion anyway though and who knows, if a new Disgaea comes out soon or something. It has been a few years.

Thanks for the recommendation...

I've played all of those (not the NI games) except Stella Deus and tons of others, gonna check those out. Appreciate it.

Don't bother reincarnating during the main game. if you ever find yourself struggling, just buy the best fist you can from the store, hop into its item world and rush to level 10 or 20, then the next part of the main story becomes a joke. start to struggle again a few chapters down the line? buy fist, item world it up to 10 or 20, back to a joke.

I should stay away from this thread, it'll make me want to replay the series again

Nah I have never have any trouble at all during any point of the story - that's not really the point. I was kind of hoping to explore the upgrades of the classes and the different classes they have to offer...kind of the point right? I don't want to play the same basic, static shit for the entire game.

edit: Thanks Pyros. Like I said I just found the series and didn't do a lot of research before typing this thread out, obviously.

If you have a nice powerful weapon that you can oneshot recent enemies with while still being level one, getting back up to the level you were at before isn't too bad. The exp you get is so dependent on the levels of the enemies you are fighting, just three or four replays of the last map you were at will boost you back up if you solo it with that one guy. This is all assuming the main game, not the postgame, postgame it just depends on your specialists and the maps you have available and the enemies you can take.

I lost a few key battles at certain points in the story and the game started me back at the first stage. After a few times of this I said fuck this shit and never played it again.

Thx info Elidib, although I still consider that a pretty major flaw in gameplay. I want to experience progression and variety (asking for more than 1 - 3 skills throughout an entire game can't be asking too much...) without being penalized to do so. I guess grinding isn't exactly a penalty, but the mechanics for that could've been done a little differently in my opinion.

Noodleface, save before every single battle dood!

Honestly, the game's mechanics arent based around the main story, so dont judge the games systems solely on what you encounter as you proceed through it. You'll beat the game somewhere between level 70-100 and in that time frame you will barely scratch the surface of the depths of what you can sink your time into in the Disgaea series.

You're not supposed to take a class and be happy with what they give you, you're expected to take a character/class you like and tailor make it to what you want it to be. Character World will let you make anyone into virtually anything. If you're into that sorta thing, Disgaea has a crapload of content post-story to battle your way through such as the X-Dimension, Mount of Ordeals, the Land of Carnage, Reverse Pirating and a series of post-game bosses that will drive you to the edge of sanity at times. All it takes is the willingness to grind and desire to make insanely powerful characters (your characters stats wont fit in the box they can go so high) and you could easily pour hundreds of hours into the game.

The thing I really didn't like in the later installments of the series is that they just kept adding more and more randomness to the postgame grind, and more tedious collecting of shit.

I hated resetting for warp rooms, i hated resetting to collect pirate maps, i hated resetting to get better specialists on the random panels in reverse-pirate items, I hated having to dupe items via PPS just to save thousands of hours of collecting specialists. It made me furious and I also felt like I was ruining the components of my playstation. I'm really glad to hear they are doing away with at least some of that in Disgaea D2.

Good to know, thanks for the info guys. I'll be sinking my normal FFT nostalgia game play time into this from now on until I master it. Looking forward to D2.

& For what it's worth, I could not stand Record of Agarest War. I tried that and Zero. Don't know, gave it a shot and it just didn't do it for me. Same with Valkyria Chronicles.

I did save after every battle, but it literally restarts the game and I was like "well shit, I guess this is how the story goes ::SAVES::". They just fuck with you if you lose. After a couple times I decided not to fall for their tricks but then I said fuck it to the game anyways.

Oh, I know what happened. I see what you mean. I created a separate save file after my first loss because I knew something was fishy. I thought maybe I lost a critical battle that will change the plot of the rest of the game depending on your win/loss so I created the extra save file to see the other side of it. I lucked out. Been fucked over by games too many times, pro move for sure.

La Pucelle Tactics is a very good game and a real good introduction to Nippon's games, they all carry the same kind of "flavor".
Tactics Ogre is real good ( I have it for playstation 1) not sure which other platforms it came out on.
Saiyuki: Journey West is another good PS1 tactics game.
If you've ever played any Dynasty Warriors games, Dynasty Tactics 1 and 2 are not bad Tactics games too.
Another would be the Agarest war series, as mentioned above, some like it and some don't, I'm not a huge fan but I have friends that love it.

The PSP/Vita have some amazing srpgs along the Disgaea lines, including the remastered Disgaea 1 and a direct port of Disgaea 2. A remastered version of Tactics Ogre also came out on it a couple years back as well as Jeanne D'Arc and Phantom Brave are also available.

The psp/vita port of disgaea 3 has all the dlc free plus a whole added content the console version never got.
