Inb4 loltards complaining about copying lol champions.

That said not sure why you'd assume Wukong, I don't think he'd be riding a horse. which begs the question, which heroes rides a horse, none really, unless they made Terrorblade some sort of knight, or Pitlord. Hopefully it's just not a shitty CK arcana skin.

Edit: Reading the full announcement I guess it's just a random picture for the year of the horse.

Yeah just a picture for the year of the horse. However Valve had a bunch of shit talking about the Chinese new years and having artists submit stuff to the workshop related to the Chinese new year. So it would makes sense that the new hero related to Chinese mythos would be added. Also it seems like Valve's itching to add a hero that was never limited by the WC3 engine.

Its not speculation, you can play one game of ranked, and use the console commands I mentioned above to see the elo that your account is working with after 1 game. Your future wins/losses adjust it from that point and after 10 games it becomes visible. Quite simply, there is no way to narrow down your skill bracket in dota in just 10 games from scratch alone. They definitely use what the system has as your unranked elo as an influence on the baseline.

I'm not talking about uncertainty and skill level, the poster makes claims about what does and doesn't contribute to the ranking which AFAICT is purely speculation

I ranked 2833 after the 10 matches, I believe I've completed 5-10 more and I'm just short of 3k now. My score has gone up every game barring one where it dropped a similar amount.

I thought Icefrog still has the last word when it comes to game design ? Valve does some really good games, but they seem to focus test almost to a fault as Portal 2 has shown.

Pretty sure he does, and don't think Valve is itching to "add a new hero not limited by the WC3 engine" when it's been shown that the dota2 engine isn't really any better than the WC3 one other than obvious graphical stuff. The WC3 engine doesn't really have any limits other than max map size(so you can't go crazy on assets), it just takes a ton of work to code specific ability triggers using various workarounds to make whatever you want, but if you do spend that time you can make more or less anything work. It just comes down to wether or not it's worth the effort, like fixing legacy mechanics bugs/interactions when it's not particularily necessary(phase boots+crit for example).

In comparison, dota2 doesn't look to be particularily well coded. Every fucking new hero always has the same bugs because for some reason they didn't for example create tags for magic immunity, health loss, composite damage and so on, so every time a hero interacts with those simple mechanics, they have to redo the entire list of shit that goes through/doesn't go through, modifying a bunch of heroes again.

I think mostly they want to do another yearly event with a chinese year theme, similar to what mmos do, like wow had the lunar festival or whatever. I assume they just sell a lot more cosmetics shit during these events so they'll probably look into making an event every couple of months or so, chinese new year, easter/valentine, summer holiday, halloween, christmas or so.

Decided to hit this hard from after new years until March(at least) but from now until then I want to dick around and learn some stuff. Where is best place for guides and any recommendations for support heroes?

If we can edit the first post and add current links that would be great. Thanks.

Best way to learn is playing and understand hero mechanics, skills, items and then watching pro replays (not vods).

Just how new are you? Just trying out dota or familiar but just want to focus your play?

Reddit sidebar has a wealth of actual good links. Reddit itself is pretty trash though, so are the official forums. There's ingame guides to the heroes so you can follow that to learn new heroes, for general stuff the tutorial explains quite a bit, as well as some of those links on reddit I mentionned(purge guide for overall game explanation, role specific guides for how the game is actually played, jungling shit and what not).

Watching pro games between good teams can be very useful to see how the game is played at high level. Playing bots for a few days at least is also heavily recommended, even though you'll have to relearn a lot of shit when playing real people, it lets you get used to heroes, the interface etc. Ingame guild FoH(or is it Rerolled?) has a chat where people will probably answer questions.

The wiki is alright but has some wrong info now and then, good to check some stuff though.

Anyone tried crafting christmas items with the trading cards ? Apparently you can get item for ANY participating F2P game, which makes it pants on head retarded. I'm getting kinda tired of Valve going - "use the market for 0,10? items where we rake it in on every transaction".

You're mad at valve for making money off of something that is inconsequential to actual gameplay? They have to make some money somehow ...
