I think MOBA matchmaking is probably pretty damn good, especially for DOTA. You guys are just fucking whiners holy shit. Like obviously you aren't going to have a perfect team every game, why would you assume that you are entitled to that? Obviously when the system has a low amount of certainty about a new player's skill level its going to experiment with slotting them in at various levels of MMR (even 3800 OMG!). Obviously some good players are going to occasionally fuck up, have a bad day, play a new character, face a tough lane, etc. Obviously some random fucktard is going to be the same type of bitter dickhead you are at some point and leave/troll a game. Its like in real life - if someone is a jerk to you, then they're an asshole, if everyone is a jerk to you then you're the asshole - if you have the mentality that every game you play is shit, then you're probably what's toxic about the community. Its like the type of people who gravitate towards this game are inherently the kind of people who are unable to take responsibility for their own mistakes or their shit attitude, they need the other 9 players to blame it on, otherwise they'd be playing Starcraft.

tldr: holy fuck the MOBA community is the whiniest community I've ever played in, l2play n00bs

I agree bro, only shut-in poor people play these types of chink-twitch style games.

My mechanics have been improving but still terrible during team fights. Was playing shadow shaman running around duo with a BS owning everyone. Team fight happens and I wander around dazed and confused. Always doing shit like forgetting to pop my bkb before fights etc. Frustrating.

I'm the same way. I seem to lose track of my cursor in team fights.

I love this game. Get shut down as anti mage and don't get my battle fury until 23 minutes. By 40 minutes I have vlads manta and abyssal and proceed to rape faces.

I have mixed feelings with the ranked queue. When I solo queue or just queue with 1 other person I find the games are usually stomps either way. It only takes one shit ass player on either team to bring everything crashing down. More often than not when I 4 or 5 stack with friends the games are usually very competitive and enjoyable whether we win or lose. All that being said, I fucking hate all pick at this point. You're almost guaranteed to see people sit on their picks to counter and atleast 1 of 5 of the same annoying heroes every game. All draft where r u?
I agree, they need to fix All Pick. At the moment its pretty common to have players, often on both teams, not pick heroes before creeps meet. To make matters worse some bozo always wants to wait for them, just random at 0, no repicks.

I can find my cursor, I can't find me, too many flashing lights and movement.

That's why you just pop everything and hope for the best

In all seriousness, that's probably the biggest adjustment when it comes to playing DOTA is that a lot of the initiation for fights starts off-screen and you have to be aware of where you are in relation to that action.

im sick of AP for this reason, but then I don't wanna bother with drafting, at my bracket 3000, because at least in AP they are picking something they are usually very familiar with.

and depending on your captain they may not draft according to what your team can play etc. solo mmr just fucking sucks, any other 3000 rated players wanna start grouping?

im not amazing, but I have a decent concept of how to play each hero, and what items to get I just cant deal with supports who pick supports but build carry etc etc

Teck I wouldnt be adverse to grouping I was almost 2900 but now down to 2600 due to one hell of a losing streak ive been on.

Kind of an off topic question but I got a new laptop (hp) for Christmas and ive been trying to set it up to play dota but cant figure out how to turn off the short cuts on the F keys. If I want to hit f2 to target the courier it also dimms my laptop currently. Any suggestions?

Disable your "fn" key in the bottom left hand of the keyboard, should be in your keyboard settings in control panel or some HP program pre-installed on the laptop.

There's two settings for it, 1. function keys perform as if FN is held down, 2. Function keys perform as if FN is not held down. You're using the first and you want the second.

Anyone know if there is MMR decay? Before I took a 4 month long Dota break I was mostly playing in very high solo games and sometimes dragging mid tier at best high players into very high games. So I come back, do 10 team matches aaaand my team MMR is lower than all my former high normal/low high friends. Played 3 games this afternoon with a buddy and I'm certain we were a minority as English speakers. Nothing but BR trash. I'm scared...
By far the best reward for grinding to vhigh was the complete lack of South America trash. At worst you get the occasional Russian that speaks near perfect English and is somehow decent at the game despite having 200+ ping.

I definitely play with plenty of south americans queueing ranked solo on USeast/west, toxic games for me happen with people from everywhere, had some great fun games with SA teammates.. Chances are if you haven't played in 4 months, especially not on the newest patch, you probably aren't playing at the level you were at when you quit. But baring that I'm not sure exactly if there is a decay formula tbh, there isn't much reason for one to exist in dotas system. I think it may turn your volatility up on what the system thinks your rating is if you haven't played in a while. But honestly I don't know one way or the other.

Enter bios during Windows boot up and there is an option to turn off the special function keys and restore their default function. That's how my old hp laptop worked.

Or like Sutekh said just press the fn key.

That's what he wants to avoid. There are enough buttons to press in dota without needing to press two keys to select your hero or courier. Newer models might havea menu to disable it instead of having to go through bios though.

For you guys that confused as fuck in team fights, I was the same way for so very very very long.

Some of the things I did to correct the problem:
If you're playing a carry. ATTACK MOVE IS YOUR FRIEND. If you attack move at all times, when you're in a team fight and lose yourself, you'll be auto attacking some poor son of a bitch, whether it's the enemy team support or their Bristleback (oops), it's still damage that you wouldn't normally do.

Every other situation I consciously try and think of an objective to do before the fight happens. Like "I really need to find which AM is real and Scythe him." or "This person keeps ghost sceptering our carry so when he does that I'm going to Laguna Blade one shot him." While it might not be the best mind set to one track mind yourself, it helps you focus and get adjusted and then you can make decisions from there.

At least that worked for me.

Good advice, it's a bit like SC2, you need to have an idea of what will probably happen and set clear objectives - "Once carry's HP starts dropping, use the mek" "Stun x first and foremost" "Once they engage, blink in and pop my ulti."

Then you realize how important initiation is, since you need to scrap your whole plan and adjust on the fly, so sometimes you drop the laguna blade on the clockwerk who just flew in, even though you know he has blademail up.

So after coming back from vacation to a shitpile of paperwork at the job, I finally managed to catch up on real life duties and play 10 matches of ranked DOTA. Mixed bag, but got a 4116 rating. I say the best way to climb the ladder is just to start making duos with people around your skill range. I'll start, any takers? Play all roles pretty well. Just not much time to game consistently anymore.
