Casting and writing? All dog shit if your director can't pull it together. Good director can get Oscar level performances out of your worst actors.

I place casting on par with who's gonna cater the lunches on set.

with that said I really don't know how you execute a souls movie. Maybe take a tiny sliver of the lore and build it out. If you try and tackle the grand and often vague lore of souls you're gonna have a bad time

If I could make a souls movie it would make it a dark adventure film. It has to be almost vibes based....hypnotic, densely atmospheric, beautiful and horrific. It would sell no tickets and everyone would hate it.

I wish they would just throw bucks at a top tier animation studio to do this shit. Give it to Alberto Mielgo. Have you seen his short "Jibaro"? Holy fuck

Um, no. Not once, ever, have I ever said "Gee, the directing here really sucks". Fucking no one does.

But there are tons of examples of dialogue that is absolutely and utterly cringeworthy, or shows where you wonder wtf they were thinking casting x actor for y role. Neither is anything a brilliant director is going to change.

For the actors? Of course. But you aren't behind the scenes watching the director give that instruction, direction, and inspiration to those actors so please explain how you the viewer are seeing the effect of all that? Or how you the viewer are able to discern where great directing ends and great acting begins?
