Graphics are kinda important to me, I wouldnt want to play under EQ1 conditions in 2013. that said I'm fine with a WoW style as long as it is consistent, hiding shoulders would've removed my only complaint about WoW style graphics. Given the choice I do find the more realistic but with a certain style graphics of GW2 much more interesting. Until we get actual videos of EQN this is all moot, because still shots dont show you it feels (a Blizzard strength, everything is so smooth it just feels right in both WoW and D3).

I used to think I wanted 'real life' graphics in my MMO but over the years I've grown to like stylized graphics in MMO's. The game ages better. More artistic freedom. Build a more imerssive world.

Realistic style is waaaay nicer. That kieth parkinson stuff would make an amazing looking game. This modern style is for little sissies and kiddies and sissy kiddies.

I'm a sissy and I still find the cartoony style (WoW) too annoying.
I don't think that art style would fit what I'm looking for. I want a dangerous/darker looking world.

I also dislike realistic graphics, it's so unimaginative and boring.

What I want is an artistic approach but not too colorful and definitely not cartoony. Kind of what EQ1 was back in 1999.

I also don't want to see too many bright colors everywhere (flashy neon-like yellow, pink, green...etc) whether in the UI, Environment or NPC/Character models.

Simple idea that'd go a long ways for me if they also toned down the shoulder pads.

What do you guys think of Vanguards Raki race? I always hated grouping or even seeing them in game, I find the whole animal race idea pretty lame.

I dont like animal races in general, on account of me not being 8. There are exceptions though where I dont mind it. Like... hmm...... the iksar were quite cool. I just dont like cutesy shit or 'pander'ing to children. Its fine in the latest disney summer movie but i just dont want it in my game.

To be honest and at the risk of sounding condescending(I'm not trying to be just suggesting something) people think they want real graphics but we just don't have the technology to pull it off yet and also people have forgotten we play games to escape reality. Anything too real becomes stale and boring very quickly. Look at games like Arma II. Great games in their own right but they aren't main stream because they are TOO real. They aren't 'Fun' enough for your average gamer.

Hmm if you take a simple example, Planetside 2, which most likely they'll copy, it has realistic graphics. There's a difference between looking realistic, which most modern shooter do, and having realistic mechanics which seems to be your problem with Arma, not the fact it looks too realistic. Battlefield 3 or Crysis 2 probably look more realistic than Arma due to having better engines(granted you want to remove various light filters and shit but still).

Don't really care which genre they go with cause I don't mind cute races and what not, don't mind if it's realistic looking races instead(granted you could make realistic looking animal races, cute or not).

As for the style aging, with the console throttling graphic evolution, it's not nearly as bad as it was 10-15years ago. Sure nowadays EQ1 looks like crap pretty much, and it looked like crap like 4-5years after it was released compared to the rest of the games too, but something released 4-5years ago doesn't look like crap nowadays even if it used realistic style.

Lol @ dumar. He probably spent more time in wow than I did the past two years. Trade battlenet IDs? We can run some flex raids next patch! Did you do your barrrens weekly yet?

As to the art, looks fine to me. I like wow/gw2 style graphics. I always thought the eq art looked like generic, bargain bin fantasy book art that never inspired me. Reminds me of shit from the 80's. Like others have said, if the gameplay is phenomenal who gives a fuck.

False.

We're not talking about ultra realism here, we're talking about not looking like a fucking Saturday morning cartoon. Plenty of FPS games have "realistic" graphics and do just fine. As do many rpg's like Oblivion, etc.

It's a matter of proportions. Having huge shoulder armor and chests the size of a mountain is just dumb. EQ classic had more realistic proportions before Luclin came around and even the Luclin models didn't go full retard like WoW.

WoW type graphics are moronic.

Basically, some want Rift races and graphics. I found rifts visuals boring. Add a giant fat ogre race and a hobbit and rift is basically what a lot are describing.

Graphic styles are subjective so debating whether or not they are good or moronic is a stupid way to go. You can arguing if they're technically horrible like EQ2's were, but not style.

Anyway, which has had a higher nerd-rage factor created by a single picture:
A) EQN new art picture.
B) Curt Schilling posting a video of a warrior fighting a skeleton with a sword.

If you don't think mountain sized shoulder pads are moronic then there isn't any hope for you.

Take the original EQ (not Luclin) models, upgrade them with higher poly counts and then work from there. That isn't Rift.

WoW's art style is.
I can understand not liking an art style, but calling it moronic is hyperbolic. The cartoon art style does have some very large benefits for a MMO game. I personally don't give much of a shit either way as long as the engine is smooth and the game design is on point. This board just went knees to sharp over fucking box art.
