So basically 90% of what the EQN players want already exists in Eve, but you want Elves and shit not spaceships. But luckily smed plays the fuck out of Eve and allegedly will be making EQN an Eve clone instead of it's original intention of being a WoW clone.
Everything about EvE is pretty cool, except when I actually play it I get bored to tears. Love the PvP but I hate EvE's combat model. The spreadsheet thing doesn't work for me.

If they make EvE with elves and trolls that works for me. As long as they fix the combat.

yepSame for me. On paper Eve is the greatest game ever made. In reality, Zzz. I totally respect it, I just don't want to play it. But turn it in to a fantasy world that I can run around on foot, and enemies I can engage in real combat, and it would make it more like the game I always wanted.

But to pretend EQ had complex combat is insane. And while Bellringer was going through that ridiculous flowchart of needless bs a good puller would have just pulled the room and been done with it
Most of his flowchart applies to other games too, like the decision about which content to attempt with the group, he just paints it as unique to EQ.

I'm so on board with that. Dont forget the dorfs though. I'd love to have an open faction system where you can actually kill npcs in your hometown if you decide to, with the appropriate repercussions. Since it's 2013 put in two "are you sure?!" warnings that you can turn off through options and roll with it. Just gotta make sure the important NPCs are tough enough, but that should be obvious and easy (then again, plenty of dev teams fail at obvious and easy).

Being able to kill any npc was a good thing in EQ and I liked their faction system. Velious faction was a pain but it worked, a similar system could be expanded on to include PvP.

Apparently every decision you make in an MMO has to be on your hotbar. Fucking idiocy.
Sometimes I had to decide during a fight, do I want to watch Sportscenter? Maybe take a piss? Do I have enough time to make a sandwich before people get suspicious? It's tough choices like that you don't see in these McMMos anymore

Rotations are just rotations (in games such as wow)
Yes, and the point that most people want to make about rotations is that the rotation itself is not a decision. Rotations are kludges designed to satisfy a category of gamers (which a personally call "console gamers", and others less nice things) that think that, if they are not constantly pressing buttons, then they are not "engaged" with the game and aren't "playing".

In fact, the whole point of getting the rotation "right" in WoW is to make it as instinctive as possible. Because a pause to let your brain think means a delay, and a delay means lost DPS. So it's no wonder that, in as many games as possible, people create macro chains which entirely automate the rotation, making it obvious it's not about decision making but keeping your fingers engaged.

And yes, I think that, if you do not have any real decision to make about which buttons to press, then you should not need to press any. Combat only needs an auto-attack, plus a number of reaction/situational abilities that interrupt your auto-attack, let you exploit the opportunity or neutralize the menace, then you resume the auto-attack. Anything else is fluff to keep your fingers busy and try to make a bunch of console gamers think they're playing a hack-n-slash game.

You could probably find a macro to help you make that descision easier..just check the forums...

Standing in fire is not a choice nor is it on the hotbar. It's a way of life, possibly a calling.

Oh yea, a middle ground is what I always dreamt of since like 2001 or whatever. And that's the problem for me, there is nothing like that. On one side you have newer games where you log in for 5 minutes and you do a few warfronts, a few dungeons, and 20 quests and you make 15 levels and get 90 new upgrades. And the other side is EQ where you log in for 14 hours and you basically do fuck all and only make one millimetre of exp.

the industry has been crying out for a middle ground and we still never had one!
That middle ground was vanilla WoW.

so basically you're describing neverwinter combat. well the "auto-attack" is hold down left mouse button, not exactly auto, but yeah. Holding down right mouse button is a seperate auto-attack/utility ability that's situationally useful.

I love bringing it up cus people hate on the game but the other 10% that people are asking for (the other 90% being from Eve Online) exists already in Neverwinter.

I feel like yeah maybe. Food and drink shouldn't be "uber out of combat regen items" though.

Always stupid blinding someone on my rogue and eating chicken to get full hp shadow melded then stealthing in and cheese combo again.

I liked EQ's rogue vs caster with random distance shadow stepping way more.

It's pretty close. I've been piddling on a lock on emerald dream and the only thing I miss from the current incarnation is ability to click a quest name in your right tracking list and have it open up the text. Not seeing shinies everywhere or big "go hear" signs was refreshing.

I guess I'd eventually miss viable tanks beyond warriors and reasonable lfg tools. Oh and my DK. But vanilla can be pure bliss

Ready for a semblance of that and I think eq next can do it or better. Ready for challenge.

Prior to patch 1.6 it was close but no. Had far too much instanced content, too many quests, too few good sub-endgame items and the BGs were just item grinds (though AV was pretty fun until they screwed it up). Additionally the talent tree system screwed up classes and combat was just a little too fast and a little too spammy. VG was closer but also had spammy combat issues in addition to massive bugs.
