Intellectual property is a legal reality. They made something awesome... with someone elses IP. Hopefully they go make their own cool game, but DPG doesn't owe them anything. THJ devs were 100% in the wrong here its cut and dry. Doesn't mean DPG isn't... all the things people say they are, but they didn't do anything wrong here. THJ monetized IP they didn't own, dumb move.
Edit: to hopefully pre-emptive any REEing. The dumb move was specifically monetizing. The obvious move in hindsight was the take their objectively good idea and make a game with their own IP and leave the emu as it was. Instead they monetized, got sued, THJ got shut down, and they're making their own game anyway. Unless they galaxy brained this in some way I'm not aware it was just a bad decision to take the money. Getting mad at DPG for shutting it down is ignorant. You'd do the same thing is someone was stealing from you, which is exactly what this is. Maybe you'd go hire the dude stealing from you though, I dunno

I understand the law just fine. Its still a shit thing they did and I will never partake in anything DBG involved. There was other ways to handle this other than a law suit and stealing their ideas and making their own server within months of the lawsuit.

Let's not pretend like DBG gave a flying fuck about IP theft. They've ignored and let the EMU scene run amok for years, dating all the way to the Sony/Verant days. They're almost entirely hands-off with this IP. It's nothing but copy/paste "expansions" every year and selling bags/mounts to nostalgic retards like myself when a good TLP rolls around - which took Holly to even initiate. These guys have ZERO idea how to run EverQuest if it wasn't for outside/community input on rulesets.
What actually happened is an autistic, tranny retard got super buttmad that THJ started mogging the everliving fuck out of his shitty server, Quarm. And so he ran to teacher to tattle. DBG didn't even know the fucking thing existed until then.

Not to rehash the entire legal argument but. You are just wrong.
Doesn't matter. It's done.
To use that as an argument as to why DBG should have taken the concept - claimed it as their idea all along - and then given it to a tranny with a history of fucking it up - is retarded.
Everyone here on both sides of the legal argument could agree that DBG could have handled all of it so much better. They didn't. It was a PR disaster for them and it hurt everyone. It hurt their own IP, their revenue, their players, and THJ Devs whom were power eq fans (one of our own) and they are out of the game for good now.
And if you expect this to be the corner turn for DBG to "save everquest", you are going to be dissapointed.
Have fun for a few days/weeks. Because I predict that's all this is. If you think they won't fuck it up, you haven't been paying attention.

I would argue that the server making real money DID matter to them. The IP only matters in its ability to create cashflow. The company is essentially a MMO retirement home that funds itself by collecting boomer social security checks with IP they purchased, not built. I'm not saying they're good or moral, just that they're not in the wrong for protecting what they own.
Yea Secrets may well have been scummy in all this no argument on that point. I'm not interested enough to dig into it honestly.
THJ devs got greedy and caught the legal smackdown that was 100% predictable. If you want to be mad at anyone, be mad at them for taking the easy cash grab and getting your fun server nuked. They're clearly talented though so hopefully whatever they make is good.

I would think of it in a similar way to an ARPG guild, like Diablo or POE. You can group with others if you want, trade gear, hang in chat, help each other when needed, etc...
I'm a SSF kind of guy for the most part, so it doesn't bring much to the table for me other than a chat channel, but these are the benefits that come to mind immediately.

If i was DPG i would've worked with the EMU Devs that were successful, instead of the ones that also tried to do the same server type and failed to capture an audience. Reality is THJ started making money off the EMU seen after Secrets was already making money of Quarm. THJ also went to DPG to seek a partnership deal half a year before Secrets did.
What has been Rogean's none p99 job the past 10 years? He hasn't had one. It's been donations for p99 that pay his rent.
True how does someone "Steal" freeware? EMU servers had been making money off EQ for decades

Based on the court docs they were making just shy of 100k at the peak. But also based off the court docs they tried to contact DPG for a partnership deal around the time they actually started making large amounts of money
