Regardless of how it shook out, THJ wasn't some underground secret that Secrets ratted out. Secrets might've been involved in pushing for action against THJ, but that's uhh, more of a snake move than a rat move?
It's hard for a company to be aware of something if no one in the company cares enough about the game to look at what the emu community is doing. Furthermore, it sounds like DBG pays bottom dollar for work, so no one was paid enough to care to tell the suits, even if some of the peons knew about it. An email to customer service, on the other hand, could easily get run up the flagpole since a report like that would be more "part of their job" to address.

I don't know how trustworthy it is but

Think he was probably just arguing the years part of the statement, not the thousands of players.

i don’t hate it. i’m still playing. finished my gear, banestrikes, faction achievements (except 1 seems unrealistic to me), working on hunters now, thinking about buying a shotgun and some bullets after that

you know, to shoot them at my head, if you know what i mean

nah, not that bad. i like everquest and for now, this is still everquest. im just noticing that items from the patch notes are not actually making it into the game, and i dont fully understand why no one seems to really mind. maybe they are fixing things no one cares about in the first place, i guess

Long time lurker that hasn't posted in decades here... This game pissed me off enough to post again. I tried so hard to like it, but they completely missed what made THJ successful. It wasn't really the multi-classing. It was the power fantasy.

Secrets and Co put a ton of effort into making balanced gameplay, when the entire point is for characters to be unbalanced. I played for close to a month, but it felt more like multi classing in P99 than playing THJ. It's not difficult. It just feel sluggish, and no one is getting a dopamine hit from looting shit with +3 strength.

That said, they did definitely have a dilemma on their hands. THJ's approach was not a valid long term plan. After PoP there wasn't really anywhere to go, and I suspect player count would have started to drop substantially. No one would have wanted to play GoD.

The better approach would have been to release the expansions through PoP once a month to buy themselves time to come up with custom content. Instead they have been fucking around adding +2 agi to drops in unrest.

I know what you mean but I kinda dispute this. Given their pace of development I think it would've been possible to support GoD (which some people would want) and roll a new server (which others would have wanted). And of course there is a third group of people who would say they want to live in one of Classic, Kunark, Velious, Luclin and PoP forever, but would probably quit not too long after something shiny came out.

Yeah I mean any plan other than this going GoD->OOW etc probably would have worked. Starting up seasons might have been the play. I just know most TLPs lose a ton of population as soon as PoP becomes stale.

Custom content unlocking level 70 might be cool also as glasses start to get some pretty cool abilities/spells in that range. It's just a bummer having to play GoD comes along with them.

Edit: reminded me of another massive failing of EQL... They added very very few of the fun out of era AAs. That is a huge reason it felt more like p99 than THJ to me.

THJ's approach was not a valid long term plan.

THJ could have offered weekly instances with high difficulty, unique loots and leaderboards.

People would be all over it.

They could rotate instances that have out of era clickies or spells, mounts, illusions, access to new generic AA lines, .. plenty of options based on stuff that is already ingame on eqlive.

Add a monthly instance that can only be done if at least 3/4 weeklies were completed. Announce that his event will drop manastone, and a ton of players would pursue the weeklies.

Scale difficulty based on classes used. Encourage people to do shit on the weak trios they'd otherwise skip. (for eql).

It is not hard.

Heck, they could use AI to see what kind of trios are played by people and do targeted advertisement based on that.

I guess "natch potes" is the best they can do though.

Buddy got me into this. Gotta say - I'm not really understanding the hate.

It is not hate when you state that the game is being managed extremely poorly, because it is.

You can't make players 30-50x stronger and give them content at only 3x the pace classic eqlive did.

Yet that is exactly what they have done.

I'm pretty sure they were going to go Seasons eventually with some twists thrown in like ARPG's do. They had the entire game set up as a loot pinata. People would have played that for sure.
