It's been a long time since I did the 24 mans in Stormblood, but I distinctly remember going "Oh they're just using the names" as I worked through them. Zero connection to FFT aside from name and some absolutely minor flavor. The Nier stuff was a bit more relevant and related, but yeah the Return to Ivalice stuff in FFXIV was definitely just name recognition and not actually related in any way.

Yeah they hired Matsuno (directed Tactics and XII) to help create them, but was always meant to be an alternate universe retelling. He also wrote the Bozja story, including the Save the Queen stuff, which apparently was an unused story idea for a potential Vagrant Story sequel.

Vagrant Story, now that's something that could really use a remaster. One of the best PS1 games and it's basically lost to time / too ugly to play now. In the same limbo as Xenogears and Bloodborne.

I played Vagrant Story's soundtrack over Dark Souls 1's silent areas one of the times I played it and it was amazing how well Sakimoto's music fit.

I remember playing Vagrant Story around when it released and not quite grasping the weapon system right away. Like I could match the timing and keep chains going to infinity, but the weapon would start doing 1 damage after like the third hit. I got distracted by something else almost immediately ( I want to say it was Kunark hah) after I picked it up, and basically never played it again. Lost all my old console stuff in a storage fire decades ago and could never find a physical cart for a reasonable price. Always wanted to revisit but kept forgetting to find a ROM for it. Might do that today~

It's one of those games that if you're going to play it, you gotta focus on it and get into it. Sort of like a Fromsoft game. Just giving it a cursory look or trying to play it in small bits alongside other things probably isn't going to work that well / you won't get as much out of it.

Also one of those games that looks a lot better on a CRT TV.

But yeah, it's worth playing for everyone once, for sure. When I played it around this time in 2000, I ended up with specialized weapons for like every monster type, which took a lot of work in the blacksmith laboratory. It was the kind of micromanagement that I had a lot more mental energy for back then.

Feels like something they might get around to, if Tactics gets well and Ivalice interest goes up.

Problem isnt interest in ivalice. The problem is the devs fancy themselves movie makers and want to reinvent every wheel they can find. They do not want to iterate on the same setting or mechanics. They want to think up half baked bullshit. Direct a movie. And dumb down mechanics

FF9 -

“Hey you motly band of rebellious youth should not be here bringing unwanted attention to our village”

“It’s okay fam, dont worry…”

Entire place gets obliterated bc of your presence

“Hey, umm are you all the reason that place got WTF-BBQ’ed? You really should leave.”

“No, um, and its not like they can just keep summoning that dragon dude or anything…we will prot….shii…..”

Place gets more WTF-BBQed

Way to go, being the reason two (or more) people groups are now dust

FF9 was kind of largely my last "favorite" Final Fantasy that isn't an mmo. The characters were goofy but colorful and interesting, and the story was kind of cool right up until the literal final battle (Necron is still the most wtf boss I have come across) and I really liked the ATB system and skill learning system. The card game was objectively worse than Triple Triad but at the end of the day, it was a pretty complete game.

FF16 is solid but action/combo combat more akin to Kingdom Hearts or Devil May Cry, which neither are Final Fantasy. I actually liked the story and found it pretty easy to follow, and the last guy wasn't a complete WTF like Necron. But yeah, it simply wasn't as much Final Fantasy as I would have liked. Better than 13 or 15 tho (maybe not better than 13-2; that game fixed a lot of the FF13 problems)

FF16's final bad guy reminded me a lot of Necron. Very out of nowhere and a similar design.

Necron himself was supposed to be Necrophobe from FF5 (the penultimate bad guy, served as the underboss of all of Exdeath's goons). An odd choice to bring back for FF9's final boss outta nowhere.

FF13-2 is really, really good. Super underrated. I only played it once, but I platinumed it. Yeah, it fixes a lot of what FF13 did wrong, while preserving the aesthetic, and is probably the best-looking game of the PS3 generation. It has a lot of time travel between different eras, which might have been them trying to recapture some of Chrono Trigger's vibes. It's a much better game than 15 or 16.

Both of the -2's (10-2 and 13-2) were super good and belong in the main series. They should have just been FF11 and FF14, with the online ones given a different numerology.

Oh man. war of the lion on psp was fantastic.

My son has wanted to play this because I always talk so fondly of it. But alas I only have it on ps1 and psp. But this will be great to play together.

Hopefully it sells really well and they revisit this genre with a new fft game.

Ultima way more involved in the story then Necron was.

I guess I stopped paying attention around the 80% mark when the Evil Queen stopped being the antagonist. For me the whole story with her was way superior to the endgame stuff and I'm not sure why they replaced her. FF does that kind of thing a lot, though.

Dude the first Ultima presented itself after Cid died. That was maybe 1/3 into the game? I'm not disagreeing about the game being bad but holy shit, wtf were you playing? I would have considered Barnabus more of a primary antagonist than the half-wit ladder climbing mom, and he was cucked out for retarded shit too.

So any idea if the extra secret character from War of the Lion are going to be in the remaster? Like Balthier.

Or the extra classes like onion knight or dark knight?
