I've been told that FFTA gets alright once you're far enough in that you're manipulating the judgement system. I never got that far. I quit after I screwed a few things up, needed to grind some cash to get some people out of jail and got handed a fight where I could take no action that didn't result in another penalty. I was obviously fucking things up but the game itself just seemed design to spite me personally. See also Chrono Cross.

That shit is a pain in the dick even if you're a super tryhard.
i think its a lot easier in this version? but yeah getting the first steal of his shield was brutal lol, by the end his bravery was as low as it can be

Anti-vampirism jewelry for everyone, lower his bravery enough that you can stick speed break on him (dual wield so each break is two breaks), speed break him to 1 speed, steal steal steal, don't die while you're setting all that shit up.

Since people are talking about other tactics games, I'mma rank all the tactics games I've played real quick, off the top of my head, might give someone an idea of what to play next if they like this. Not counting the Fire Emblem/Advance Wars/Shining Force games because IMO they're their own genre type, but most of them are pretty good too.

Best to worst:

Tactics Ogre
FF Tactics
Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis (GBA)
Triangle Strategy
Front Mission 1
FF Tactics A2 (The DS sequel to FFTA, was actually decent - Has nothing to do with FFTA storywise, and borrows music from FF12)
Suikoden Tactics
Front Mission 3
Onimusha Tactics (Not bad, just very barebones)
Front Mission 2 (Didn't like it at all)
FF Tactics Advance

Haven't played Bahamut Lagoon yet, really need to, think it's vaguely in the same ballpark. Have a whole list of Japan-only SNES RPGs that I wanted to play as a kid, like Bahamut, Rudra no Hihou, Treasure Hunter G, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, and probably some others I'm forgetting, but just never got around to them.

The Spiral in sword of convallaria is really well done, but youll need to constantly spear away gatcha content trying to get ya.

A full spiral run is briefer than a normal full tactics game but has a ton of battle and character variety

shit the loadout feature alone makes this remake worth it. If FF7 Remake Part 3 can finally add something like this for materia/weapon skills/weird board skills loadouts, all will be well. Also laughable how easy to just one shot stuff to Poach at start of battles and how fast it is to restart battle for easy rare carcass farming.

When you restart the fight you don't keep anything you got from it, though, right?

Wondering about this rare caracass farming thing because the "ten rare items from poaching" trophy is one of the few I have left and I have no idea how to even go about doing that. Never bothered with poaching at all in previous playthroughs, and don't know what constitutes a rare item or what mobs I should be looking for.

it really doesn't. there are several solid mods/romhacks that are all better than anything Squeenix is capable of these days.

Anyone know what romhack it is that adds back in the dummied-out Lucavi fights? For example, the late-game Algus fight is added back in and he uses the Taurus stone to turn into Duma.

Some other version (PSP?) adds the Algus fight back into the game, but he doesn't have the Lucavi form afterwards, despite it also being in the game data.

when you say keep anything from it, what exactly do you mean? I've been Enticing monsters into my party, have them pop out eggs until you get rare types, then just put them in a battle and farm for rare poach. Basically just have Ramza be whatever powerhouse class that will be able to one shot the mob (honestly often this is easy, I'll get some monsters that when they spawn from egg they'll have anywhere from 60 health to 250 health, currently). Eventually you'll have one that has low enough health to easily one shot without any trouble, just make Ramza a Ninja or any class with enough speed that he'll act first. Place the monster right in front of him, he kills it, you see if you get the rare carcass, if not, just restart battle from the start.

Takes very little time to chain attempts, I think I read somewhere the odds on rare carcass drops is 1/8 (though your RNG may vary, of course). Now if you mean by keeping stuff from restarting the battle, you can't just farm one mob over and over restarting the battle, but you can make sure you get the rare every time from the 1 mob by restarting until you get the good RNG.

man i just got hit with a memory. i bought secret of evermore and invited my homie over i played secret of mana with. we were jazzed.

was not 2 player. i ended up liking the game okay, but it wasn't as cool.

There was a rom hack that added two-player to Secret of Evermore. My first girlfriend, who wasn't into video games at all, liked SoE and liked the dog, and wanted to try it. So I got the romhack and we did two-player and it was awesome. She actually got into it and was running around biting everything. We got all the way to almost the end of Prehistoria, and then... game freeze. Reload save state, keep going. Another game freeze. Turns out after a point in Prehistoria (around the Salabog fight) it just starts intermittently freezing up, and it happened often enough for the game to not be fun, so we didn't get to Magmar (the final boss of Prehistoria).

It's a shame because it almost got her into games and we might have actually stayed together longer if that had happened. She was totally down to beat the game with me which would have been pretty sweet. At least she didn't hate gaming as much after that, and let me have my RPG time.

Found it, Duma is in this "Souls of Destiny" romhack. This romhack looks kind of nutso.

And yeah, Duma is also in FF14 Stormblood. Any other cut Lucavi in that? I wouldn't know any others even if I saw them, Duma is the only one I know for sure was dummied out.

By "rare type" egg monsters, that'd be like...red chocobo, or red dragon? Damn, I fired a few red chocobos earlier during the great purge. Have a red dragon, at least. So I need ten of these rare carcasses to get the trophy, I take it? This is gonna take a while, if I have to wait for ten red dragons to spawn. I'll probably end up doing this at the very end when I'm cleaning up the class-maxing.

I mean, the fight's right here:

That's the official Square version too.

I'm not sure what you need for the trophy, but it might just be any 10 rare carcasses. Every poach has common or rare. If it's just 10 rares of any kind, you could get that fairly quickly. Red chocos are semi useful. Their rare carcass can get you barettes. These used to be female only, but now males can wear them, as well. Even classes that don't wear head gear normally like Monks can wear them.

Poaching - Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions Walkthrough & Guide - GameFAQs

This has decent poaching list. Not all items are super useful, and some of the monsters you have to wait until certain points of the game to be able to have them show up in battles.

Hmm, so reading trophy list if it's the "Rare Wares" one, you just need 10 items that come from poaching that aren't ever sold by shops. I have no idea if there are only 10, for ref I'm only at 2/10 on that, but I'm only in chapter 3 without access to a good bit of the rarer monsters.

That second Algus fight is from WOTL. I'm going to slam my doubt button on him being a Lucavi candidate pre-FF14.

You can poach some ribbons and chantage by then, it’s practically impossible to die. Use Beowulf to chicken, kill off the broads, and just steal.
