Yeah thanks a ton @a_skeleton_02. I had been thinking about attempting to run a forum tournament, but I'm sure mine would have gone way less smoothly than yours. 'preciate it.

I was running standard Esper control. I had a very good matchup with Kiroy , but i decided not to block my own thief of sanity, who had stole a Nicol already and he got a Wrath out of me that wiped the board. Then his walkers took over.

My other version of esper with Kaya would have been better over all.

You swap Kaya with 2 Precognition and it makes a world of difference.

First it gains so much life against any aggro deck, that they have to deal with it(you gain minimum 2 turns with it), and it would have made those graveyard recursion cards ineffective.

Esper spin on the Dimir Midrange lists that are floating around. Theoretically should be a really good deck, maybe I'm just a bad player. :p

Nah man, I've been trying to make all kinds of similar lists work, and they just don't quite do it. Which sucks, cause I really love the idea and wanna make it work. The idea being to take how esper control looks after siding, when they bring in creatures, and make that the main deck.. with the option to become 'esper control' after siding instead. However, you end up being a bad control deck against aggro/midrange, and their removal spells aren't dead now. Like, hostage taker/thief are so much better when opponent had to side out removal, and now they just die to whatever instead. That's how its seemed to me, anyway. The only 'esper midrange' lists I've seen kinda work, used hero of precinct one to flood the board while casting thought erasures/removal. Or, one that ran kitesail freebooter, thought erasures and basilica bell haunt to strip opponents hand.

Yeah Enzee broke my back in the finals with cindervines just too much incidental damage to stabilize.
cindervines did WORK in that 2nd game. Think it was around 10 damage. You're still 3-2 overall in games against me heh, just finally had some answers line up for once. Games 1 and 3 were intense, though. I had to really think about each of my draws, when i could afford to cast a creature or hold up a removal spell, etc..

yea, thats basically the list i played against, but the guy played at least one basilica bell haunt, too. I remember everything else got hit by bugler, though.

The lack of performance from my Esper baffles me because a decent amount of people are having success with Dimir lately (most notably Seth Manfield http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?ID=15150). My deck is basically just that Dimir list with with an angel package instead of Doom Whisperer, and Mortify + Kaya's Wrath in place of the pure black spot removal / sweepers. So I guess either the clunkier mana base weakens it or I just suck. :)

I haven't played that dimir list just yet, but from looking at it, the cleaner manabase can really make a difference. Sometimes, delaying a spell for even one turn can mean the difference between a win or loss. Plus, the dimir deck has way more lands coming into play untapped to do duress/thought erasure right away.

So, instead of esper having to play a tapped shock land on t1, or take 2 damage against aggro, dimir can go t1 duress, t2 thought erasure/discovery, t3 disinformation campaign or some variation of that. Esper often has to take one of those turns off to make its mana work out, or take a bunch of damage, and then it's playing catchup to any early pressure either way. Without a sweeper to catch you back up, you are just in a bad position all game, especially if you went 2nd.

I'm gonna try that dimir list right now, though.
