Terrible news...

From race control:

During today’s first race of the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers, a serious accident involving seven competitors occurred in the early stages. Following the collision between several vehicles, race control immediately halted the race to allow for extensive recovery and rescue operations.

Despite the immediate arrival of emergency services, the emergency medics were unable to save the driver involved, Juha Miettinen (BMW 325i, #121), after he had been extracted from the vehicle; the driver died at the Medical Centre after all attempts at resuscitation proved unsuccessful.

The other six drivers involved were taken to the Medical Centre and nearby hospitals for precautionary examinations. None of the injured are in a life-threatening condition.

Appalling news. Thoughts with his family and team.

Apparently, a car was leaking oil(or some sort of fluid) on the track, and it caused a 7 car pile up. It's just terrible luck.

I raced motorcycles in my early 20's and saw a guy die in a similar fashion at Hallett in Oklahoma. Another bike blew his motor on the straight and oiled down the braking zone, dude went into the tires at about 120 and then got smashed by other bikes crashing after him.

Are we finally getting some racing again? That was like going thru winter again.
It wasn't ideal, but it will be interesting to see some early season upgrades with this extended break. I'm hopeful for some much closer racing as teams who didn't nail it like Mercedes have a chance to make some significant adjustments.

Mercedes domination may be short lived going by the sprint qualifying results. Let's hope so!

FYI, the F1 race got moved up to 1PM eastern due to the weather in the area at the original start time. It should be a very interesting start of the race at least with Max in the #2 spot and it's still supposed to rain around that time just not as heavy.

Nice! That sounds fun. Sprint was kinda :emoji_zzz: , poor Brundle sounded like he'd been partying hard the night before :emoji_laughing:

I may spend the extra time on the pre-race show this time to get a rundown on what they changed over the break. Something about energy stuff to make it less fake?

holy shit, what a fucking race. I'm starting to think that FIA has finally done something good when it comes to regulations. Fuck the drivers whining. Shut up and entertain me or get the fuck out.

I only got to watch the last 20 laps, but that last one... :emoji_laughing:

Can only imagine being a Ferrari fan and watching Leclerc spin and then lose podium as he struggles to even finish.

Happy for Williams, double points day.

Lots of investigations I guess after the fact that could impact the final standings.

Max's spin was crazy. He did a perfect 360 and continued on like it was nothing. It's amazing he didn't get hit in the process.

Yeah. Nice to have racing back again. Already getting into my 'really wish I could make it to the Vegas Grand Prix' malaise again this year, but I'm going to Italy in August, that's kinda sucked up the budget for other fun stuff.
