DS9 has three different docking ports to fit ships of various sizes - external pylons, internal pylons, and the outter ring. It's a lot bigger than it appears, and the landing pads are barely big enough for the shuttlecrafts. It's also no where near as big as one of your standard TNG era space stations that can fit like 8 Galaxy class ships in it.

It's a defensively designed station with a shit ton of weaponry. Extra shield generators would be necessary if the pylons stuck outwards. Damn Cardassian logic.

Always wondered why they'd even need to dock ships in the first place when they can just use the transporter to move things around instantly. There's even a special cargo transporter mentioned several times.
